Sleeping in the Hassan district

Quartier Hassan - Architecture
Entrance to the Mohammed V Mausoleum

The Hassan district, the historic heart of the city, fascinated us with its architectural richness. You’ll be in the immediate vicinity of emblematic monuments such as the Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum.

Benefits:

  • Central location, close to the main monuments(Hassan Tower and Mohammed V Mausoleum)
  • Excellent transport links (tramway, bus)
  • Wide choice of good-quality accommodation

Disadvantages:

  • Administrative district: little atmosphere in the evening
  • Heavy weekday traffic
  • Often higher rates
  • Large number of tourists
  • Limited parking

Our favorite hotel: Hotel La Tour Hassan Palace

Sleeping in Rabat’s historic center

Rabat medina

A stay in or around the medina of Rabat, a UNESCO World Heritage site, allows you to fully immerse yourself in the traditional Moroccan atmosphere. With its lively alleyways, local crafts and ancient architecture, it’s a warm and welcoming experience. Many riads have been carefully renovated to provide modern comforts without losing the old-world charm of this imperial city. If you’re looking for authenticity and proximity to cultural sites such as the Kasbah des Oudayas, Rue des Consuls or the seaside, then you’ve come to the right place!

Benefits:

  • Authentic atmosphere and living heritage
  • Close to places of interest
  • Typical accommodations (riads) offering good value for money
  • More immersive experience than in modern hotels

Disadvantages:

  • Access sometimes difficult by car (narrow streets or pedestrians)
  • Comfort varies from facility to facility
  • Streets sometimes busy early in the morning or in the evening
  • Orientation in the medina not always easy for a 1st visit

Our favorite hotel: Riad Meftaha Hotel

Sleeping in the Agdal district

Agdal district - Modernity

L’Agdal, what a modern and dynamic district! Its cosmopolitan atmosphere and contemporary infrastructure immediately appealed to us. Here you’ll discover the economic heart of the capital, with its restaurants, shopping centers and business areas.

Benefits:

  • Modern, well-equipped neighbourhood
  • Dynamic and commercial atmosphere
  • Numerous restaurants, cafés and stores
  • Well-connected to Rabat-Agdal station and the tramway

  • Less traditional charm
  • Fewer tourist attractions in the immediate vicinity
  • Neighborhood sometimes noisy in the evening
  • Few traditional accommodations (riads, guest houses)

Our favourite hotels: Rabat Marriott Hotel and Stayhere Agdal 4 Aparthotel

Sleeping in the Marina Rabat-Salé district

Marina Rabat-Salé - Marina view

La Marina has delighted us with its location near the mouth of the Bouregreg River on the Atlantic Ocean. You’ll enjoy a peaceful setting overlooking the water, slightly off the center of town.

Benefits:

  • Breathtaking view of the Bouregreg River, its mouth on the ocean and the medina
  • Peaceful, modern ambience
  • Quick access to 2 cities (Rabat and Salé) by car

Disadvantages:

  • Neighborhood under development: limited activity
  • Fewer dining options in the immediate vicinity
  • Need a car, cab or VTC to reach the historic centers?

Our favorite hotel: Fairmont La Marina Rabat Salé Hotel

Sleeping in the Souissi Ambassadeurs district

Souissi Ambassadeurs - street

Between residential elegance and vast green spaces, the Souissi district is a privileged environment in which to stay. We enjoyed strolling through the quiet lanes and boulevards close to the diplomatic residences.

Benefits:

  • Elegant residential neighborhood, very quiet and secure
  • Upscale accommodations with gardens and pools
  • A green and relaxing atmosphere

Disadvantages:

  • Limited choice of restaurants
  • Far from the center and tourist sites
  • Higher prices
  • Few shops or events within walking distance

Our favorite hotel: Hotel Sofitel Rabat Jardin des Roses

Sleeping in the Océan district

Quartier Océan - Littoral
Plage de Rabat Ville – Extension after the lighthouse

Can you feel the sea breeze and the smell of iodine as you stroll through this district? We found it very pleasant to stroll the streets of the Océan district. Thanks to its proximity to the Atlantic coastline, you’ll enjoy a natural setting with direct access to certain beaches.

Benefits:

  • Close to the coast and the medina
  • Authentic and popular atmosphere
  • Affordable rates by accommodation type

Disadvantages:

  • Relative isolation from downtown
  • Neighborhood a little less well maintained
  • Less choice in high-end accommodation
  • Noise and traffic depending on location

Our favorite coastal hotel: Hotel Conrad Arzana

Other useful tips to keep in mind

  • Morocco’s administrative and political capital, Rabat is a calm, clean city with a balance between modernity and tradition. Less hectic than Casablanca, it offers a quality of life appreciated by travelers and locals alike. It’s a city on a human scale, ideal for a cultural break, a romantic weekend or a business trip.
  • The climate is mild oceanic, with pleasant winters and summers moderated by the sea breeze. It can be visited all year round, but the months of April to June and September to November are particularly pleasant for enjoying the terraces, parks and nearby beaches.
  • Hotel demand is strong during school vacations, political events and international business forums. Neighborhoods such as Hassan, Agdal and the Marina are highly sought-after. We recommend booking in advance, especially in spring and autumn.
Mohammed V Mausoleum
  • Parking in the city center can be tricky, especially around the Medina, Avenue Mohammed V and the Hassan district. If you’re coming by car, hotels with private parking or valet parking are best. Some areas have pay-and-display parking lots; find out more here.
  • In Rabat, you’ll find a tram system that connects the city’s main neighborhoods to Salé by crossing the Bouregreg River. Blue taxis (the city’s official taxis) are everywhere and inexpensive for short distances, although they can be hard to find during rush hour.
  • The VTC option is also interesting and safe to explore! To explore the surrounding area, car hire can be useful, but please be careful with traffic and parking.
Botanical test gardens in Rabat
Botanical test gardens in Rabat
  • Rabat is a green city: take advantage of large parks such as the Jardin d’Essais Botaniques or the seafront for peaceful strolls. It’s also a dynamic cultural capital, with a rich program including the Mawazine Festival, one of the world’s biggest music festivals (see here), and theater, cinema and dance events throughout the year. Consult the city’s cultural calendar here or the official tourist office website here (or even at your accommodation).
  • Bear in mind that the criteria for awarding stars to hotels can vary from country to country. In Rabat, many of the tourist accommodations in our selection are located in urban and modern buildings. In the historic center, some accommodations are located in old traditional houses (in areas that can be noisy at night).

We were moved by the history of this establishment, which was opened in 1918 by the Compagnie Transatlantique in Rabat. Enjoy ocean views from the well-exposed terrace. This boutique hotel is renowned for its historic charm and value for money. Hotel La Tour Hassan Palace - Andalucia Gardens

Why stay there?

Now let’s head to a luxury hotel steeped in history and charm, right in the heart of the Hassan neighborhood: the Hôtel La Tour Hassan Palace. Built in 1912, this historic hotel embodies, in our view, Moroccan refinement.

As soon as we walked in, we were impressed by the decor: carved colonnades, sparkling zellige mosaics, and tree-lined patios create an atmosphere worthy of the grand Arab-Andalucian mansions. The garden, bathed in light around the pool, offers a haven of coolness and serenity.

When it comes to dining, a variety of atmospheres await you, including Restaurant Le Laurier, where “bistronomic” cuisine is thoughtfully reimagined to delight your taste buds.

9. Hotel MGallery Le Diwan Rabat (4 stars)

Hôtel Mgallery Le Diwan Rabat - Modern lobby

Why stay there?

The first thing that struck us during our stay at the MGallery Le Diwan Hotel was the contemporary decor of the lobby, with its wood-effect walls, hanging books, and modern artwork.

When we arrived in our spacious, bright room—which featured large floor-to-ceiling windows and a small balcony—we were assured of optimal comfort and tranquility. Another highlight of the hotel, in our opinion, is its cultural touches—particularly the iconic Moroccan items, such as the tarbouche, which were displayed at breakfast along with explanations. It’s a great way to learn more about the local culture! We really enjoyed the breakfast buffet, set up at a bar facing a lovely open kitchen.

To wrap up your stay, visit the spa or dine at the Diwan’s Restaurant Relais de Paris on the hotel’s ground floor, where French elegance meets Moroccan warmth.
