Must-see places in Marrakech
In our opinion, the must-see places in Marrakech are the following. They determine the minimum number of days you’ll need to plan.
- The Medina and its souks
- Jemaa El-Fna Square and the Koutoubia Mosque
- The Majorelle Garden and the Pierre Bergé Museum of Berber Art
- Yves Saint Laurent Museum
- The Secret Garden
- The Bahia Palace
- Ben Youssef Medersa
- The Saadian Tombs
We think that in 4 days, you can comfortably cover these essential sites, as long as you organize your days by geographical sector to limit the number of return trips to the Medina.

Size, distance and travel time
Marrakech covers an area of 230km2, but the city is centered on the historic center, the Medina and the surrounding districts. It’s a good idea to get to know these neighborhoods so you can plan your day out.
- Most of the sights are within walking distance of the Medina, the walled historic center, which is almost entirely pedestrianized.
- To the south of the medina, you’ll find the Mellah and Kasbah districts, which are also mainly accessible on foot, but have more lanes dedicated to vehicles.
- Further north of the medina, the Guéliz modern district is a 15-20min walk or 5min cab ride away, and is home to the Jardin Majorelle, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum and the Musée Pierre Bergé des Arts Berbères.
- L’Hivernage, the hotel and party district between the two, is easily accessible by car from either.
- Further afield, the Palmeraie (10km to the north, 15-20min by cab) is mainly made up of riads and luxury hotels. How you get around will depend very much on the area you’re staying in.
Here is a map to help you find your way:

For excursions from Marrakech, here are the distances and travel times to expect by car:
- Agafay Desert: approx. 30km, 40min drive
- Ourika Valley and Atlas Mountains: approx. 60km, 1h drive
- Essaouiraabout 200km, 2h30 drive
- Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou: about 200km, or 3h30 drive
- Agadir250km, 3h drive
These excursions each require a minimum of half a day, and often a full day. We recommend that you opt for organized tours so you don’t have to worry about logistics or drive if you don’t want to. And remember to include them in your schedule as soon as you book, so you don’t have to sacrifice them for lack of time.

Criteria for deciding how many days to spend in Marrakech
Budget
Overall, Marrakech remains an affordable destination. Estimate how much you can afford in total: this will give you a clear indication of how many days you can envisage.
- The price range of accommodation in Marrakech varies considerably, from entry-level riads to five-star palaces. It’s entirely possible to find charming riads at very reasonable prices, even in the heart of the Medina. See our article on where to stay in Marrakech for prices.
- Eating out is also affordable, especially if you eat where the locals eat, such as Place Jemaa El Fna when it transforms into a foodcourt in the evening.
- Entrance fees to the main museums and monuments generally range from 50 to 180 dirhams per person.
- In the souks, on the other hand, the price displayed or advertised is never the real price: negotiation is an integral part of the experience. We recommend that you always start at 50% of the advertised price. You should also be on your guard against common scams: fake guides, exorbitant prices, etc.
- Finally , cabs rarely activate the meter even if you ask them to. So always negotiate the fare before you get in, or you’ll end up paying far more than the normal fare.

Your desires, interests and goals
The amount of time you spend in Marrakech is largely determined by your preferences. The city offers a wide range of activities, and every profile of traveler will find something to suit them, but not necessarily at the same pace.
Here’s what we think Marrakech has to offer, depending on your interests:
- Cultural and historical sites: high (palaces, medersas, mosques, tombs, Saadian and Almohad heritage)
- Museums: high (Musée Yves Saint Laurent, Musée Pierre Bergé des Arts Berbères, Musée de la Musique, Musée du Patrimoine Immatériel, Maison de la Photographie, MACMA and many others)
- Markets and crafts: high (souks organized by trade, trading, active craftspeople)
- Gastronomy: high (street food, traditional restaurants, rooftops, cooking classes)
- Nature excursions: high from Marrakech (Atlas, Agafay, Essaouira, Ouarzazate)
- Wellness: high (traditional hammams, spas, riads)
- Hiking: moderate, mainly accessible via excursions in the Atlas mountains

Visa
Morocco has different entry regulations for different nationalities. Many passports from Europe, North America and other parts of the world allow visa-free entry for tourist stays of up to 90 days. We recommend that you check entry requirements with the Moroccan consular authorities according to your nationality before booking your trip.
Personal circumstances
Take into account your own schedule, work commitments and personal responsibilities. We know that the time available doesn’t always correspond to the ideal time. The important thing is to adapt the program to your own reality, rather than trying to cram everything in.
Marrakech lends itself equally well to a short stay or a longer, more relaxed immersion. It’s a very intense city from the moment you enter the medina, but quieter in the adjacent districts and in the heart of the riads.

Weather, seasons and events
The time of year you visit Marrakech influences the quality of your stay. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the most pleasant conditions, with temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. Summer can be very hot, often exceeding 38°C during the day, making outdoor visits tiring. Winter is mild and uncrowded, which is an advantage when it comes to avoiding crowds, even if the evenings are cool.

Ramadan deserves special attention. During this period, the opening hours of shops and restaurants are modified, some places close during the day and the atmosphere of the city changes considerably. It’s neither a good nor a bad time to visit Marrakech: it’s simply a different, more intimate experience, which can be rich if you prepare for it. We advise you to find out about the dates of Ramadan (which change every year due to the lunar calendar) before planning your trip.
In high season (spring and autumn), we recommend booking your accommodation and entrance to popular sites such as the Jardin Majorelle in advance(ticket purchase online only), as queues can be long.

Frequently asked questions
Is 2 days or a weekend enough in Marrakech?
With 2 days, you can get an overview of Marrakech, but you’ll have to make choices. We suggest you concentrate one day on the Medina and Kasbah (Jemaa El-Fna Square, souks, Médersa Ben Youssef, Palais de la Bahia, rooftops) and the other on the Guéliz district (Jardin Majorelle, Musée Pierre Bergé, Musée Yves Saint Laurent, Restaurant Grand Café de la Poste). The pace is brisk, leaving little time for wandering. It’s enough to discover the atmosphere of the city, but not to grasp its depths. Read our 2 days in Marrakech article for more ideas!
Is 4 days enough in Marrakech?
With 4 days, you can see all the must-see places. You’ll have time to visit the main monuments and museums, stroll through the souks, enjoy a rooftop, and take a camel or quad ride in the desert. We think 4 days represents a good balance between discovery and availability.
A week too long in Marrakech?
No, it’s not too long. Marrakech is a city packed with experiences, and 7 days is enough time to enjoy them without rushing. You can devote several days to the Medina, its palaces and museums, plan an excursion to Essaouira or the Atlas Mountains, indulge in a hammam session, explore the local gastronomy and take time to lose yourself in the narrow streets. We love this pace, which leaves plenty of room for the unexpected!

Is 10 days too long in Marrakech?
No, 10 days isn’t too long, especially if you want to combine the city and its surroundings. With this amount of time, you can explore Marrakech in depth, take aday tripto Essaouira on the Atlantic coast, head to the Atlas mountains or the Agafay desert, and take time to visit Ouarzazate and the superb Kasbah of Aït Benhaddou. You’ll alternate between urban immersion, culture and wide open spaces, giving your stay a real sense of variety.
