Our tips for choosing your restaurant in Marrakech
Do I need to book in advance?
In Marrakech, the most sought-after restaurants are often fully booked in high season, especially those located in riads or prestigious hotels. We advise you to book as soon as possible for dinners, weekends and bistronomic addresses. For restaurants in the medina, reservations are also recommended for the rooftops, which are very popular at sunset.
Don’t forget your liquids
Credit cards are not systematically accepted in Marrakech, especially in the medina and small neighborhood restaurants. Before setting off for dinner or lunch, make sure you have enough cash to avoid any unpleasant surprises at the end of the meal. Tipping is also appreciated. Cash dispensers can be found in Guéliz and the main thoroughfares, but are rarer in the medina. You’ll find them in Place Jemaa El Fna.
Where to eat?
Traditional Moroccan cuisine largely dominates Marrakech’s offerings, and it’s not always easy to find variety, especially in the medina where rooftops and tajines follow one another from one address to the next. Nevertheless, we managed. The modern Guéliz district concentrates bistronomic and world cuisine, with a much more diversified offer. The Kasbah district is a little quieter than the Medina, with a few intimate rooftop restaurants. L’Hivernage, the grand hotel district, is home to restaurants from international establishments, in a more subdued, less immersive atmosphere.
Local gastronomy with a difference: cooking workshop and dinner show
Taking a cooking class is also a great way to discover Moroccan gastronomy in Marrakech. A workshop allows you to sample local specialties while discovering the country’s culinary traditions, spices and know-how. Depending on your tastes, you can learn how to prepare a tajine, couscous or traditional breads! Many restaurants also offer dinnertime entertainment, or a meal accompanied by traditional music and dance in a typically Moroccan atmosphere. We tried the Restaurant Le Tanjia, and a belly-dancing show enlivened our evening. It was a wonderful experience! More ideas for dinner shows here.
Best bistronomic restaurants in Marrakech
Marrakech boasts a number of bistronomic restaurants that are renewing the city’s culinary experience. These addresses work with seasonal produce, short menus or cuisines open to the world, often set up in Guéliz or in major hotels. Here are the ones we’ve tested and selected.
1. Restaurant La Grande Brasserie by Hélène Darroze (tested by our team)
Nestled within the Royal Mansour, undoubtedly one of Marrakech’s finest hotels, La Grande Brasserie by Hélène Darroze revisits the codes of the great Parisian brasseries in a palatial setting, with seasonal French cuisine subtly tinged with Moroccan flavors. We were lucky enough to visit the kitchens during our visit: a rare moment, orchestrated by a particularly welcoming and passionate on-site chef. Our meal began with zucchini flowers stuffed with homemade ricotta on a passata of fresh tomatoes and basil from the garden. The rack of lamb from Béni Mellal cooked in a herb crust, accompanied by roasted artichokes and a salsa verde, also seduced us with its mastery of cooking. The restaurant also offers cooking classes: an experience we highly recommend if your stay permits.

2. Farmers Restaurant (tested by our team)
Farmers is our favorite of our stay in Marrakech. Opened in 2024 in a former Art Deco space in Guéliz, this farm-to-table restaurant works contemporary European cuisine around produce straight from its own farm, with strong Moroccan influences and constant creativity. We were seduced from the very first plates: a roasted cabbage with fennel of remarkable vegetable precision, followed by a melting, fragrant lamb shoulder taco, then a hibiscus pear for dessert, as beautiful as it is delicate. The menu is short, the products change with the seasons, and the “slow” spirit that drives the team can be felt in every plate. The atmosphere is very contemporary, relaxed without being flippant, with a selection of natural wines to match. For travelers in search of a culinary revival in Marrakech, we think this address is a must.

3. Restaurant Bistro Arabe (tested by our team)
Located in the chic Riad Monceau, a stone’s throw from Place Jemaa el-Fna, the Bistro Arabe Oriental Jazz Bar is where chef Myriam Ettahri revisits classic Moroccan dishes with a creative approach and meticulous presentation. It was a memorable evening! The program included a live pop and rock concert in an electric atmosphere around the riad’s swimming pool. On the plate, chicken samosas with lime for starters offer a fresh acidity, followed by a saffron and scallop risotto. For dessert, crêpes baghrir Suzette, a Moroccan classic revisited, delighted the palate. A very special address in Marrakech, which we particularly recommend for a festive evening. The bar and cocktails are also famous!

To discover Moroccan cuisine in all its richness, Marrakech offers a range of addresses that emphasize recipes handed down from generation to generation: couscous, long-simmered tajines, pastillas and sweets made with almonds and honey. The best traditional restaurants are distinguished by their attention to detail, the quality of their products and, sometimes, their live entertainment. Here are the ones we’ve tried.
5. Restaurant Sahbi Sahbi (tested by our team)
Restaurant Sahbi Sahbi is an address that has impressed us, as much for its aesthetics as for the quality of its cuisine. Located on boulevard Mansour Eddahbi in Guéliz, it celebrates Moroccan cuisine handed down from mother to daughter. The decor and architecture are by Studio KO, the same studio that designed the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. We loved the design and the ochre colors, both modern and traditional. You’ll also love the large open kitchen, dominated by a magnificent copper oven used to bake the bread that’s served next. You can watch the cooks at work, in a warm, smiling atmosphere that sets the tone right from the start. We began our meal with a pumpkin maasla with honey and almonds, followed by a beef tagine with pumpkin and orange. For dessert, helloua telgheraff, crispy pancakes served with jben, the Moroccan fresh cheese, added a delicate finishing touch to our dinner. Here, tradition is refined without being distorted.

An institution run by women, Restaurant Al Fassia has established itself over the years as a benchmark for authentic Moroccan cuisine in the modern Guéliz district. The menu is 100% Moroccan, with generous couscous, slow-cooked tajines and carefully prepared traditional desserts. We enjoyed what was without doubt the best vegetable tagine of our stay in Marrakech. For dessert, we chose a crispy apple and cinnamon pastilla with vanilla ice cream. What’s more, the team has some nice surprises in store for birthdays and events: the waitresses sing. In short, a great atmosphere and great food!

Restaurant Le Tanjia is an address we found authentic! Oriental decor, a rooftop overlooking the city and, on some weekend evenings, dance performances that bring the room to life with great energy. We were lucky enough to attend one of these, and the festive atmosphere that ensues contributes greatly to the pleasure of the evening. On the plate, we opted for a chicken and vegetable tagine, generous and fragrant, just like the classic Moroccan cuisine served here. The menu focuses on the great classics: tajines, couscous, mechoui and tanjia, a house specialty. A restaurant best reserved for dinner, to take full advantage of the atmosphere.

8. Restaurant Le Grand Café de la Poste (tested by our team)
Housed in a historic building in the Guéliz district, Restaurant Le Grand Café de la Poste cultivates a chic brasserie atmosphere inherited from the colonial era, with its large wood panelling, lively terrace and round-the-clock service. The menu mixes Moroccan and international cuisine in an accessible fusion spirit that appeals to locals and travelers alike. We enjoyed the smoked Essaouira sardines as an appetizer, with their delicate, iodized flavor, followed by a beef kefta tajine with egg, well spiced and generous. Jazz evenings are also held upstairs at weekends, offering a festive and musical option for those wishing to extend the evening in a relaxed atmosphere. It’s also possible to stay on the first floor for a quieter dinner if you prefer. Last but not least, the decor is beautiful!

As soon as you enter, you’ll be won over by the decor: a French-style boudoir atmosphere! We were also seduced by the finesse of the plates and the generosity of the produce: sardines à l’escabèche with onion pickles, fresh and well-balanced in acidity, followed by a plate of peas, broad beans and lemon beldi with a beautiful vegetable vivacity. For the main course, a melt-in-the-mouth, fragrant Moroccan-style octopus loubya ragout was the highlight of our lunch.

In the Hivernage district, Restaurant Padam Padam is a restaurant that fuses Parisian and Moroccan influences in its decor, dishes and cocktails. Chef Hicham Fennane’s menu is resolutely contemporary fusion, in a festive night-time atmosphere, with music, a creative bar and late-night service. We dined here and enjoyed the cuisine: light, fragrant prawn crisps for starters, and a creamy feta with eggplant caviar. For the main course, the risotto with gambas, clams and spinach was delicious, as was the lamb mouse confit with mushroom risotto.

Nestled in a discreet, shady garden in the heart of the medina, Restaurant La Famille Cantine Solaire is an address that charmed us with its assumed simplicity and relaxed atmosphere, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding alleyways. The cuisine is vegetarian and inspired by the Mediterranean, the Middle East and local produce, in a very pleasant “slow life” spirit. We shared tagliatelle of the day with artichoke and apricot, surprisingly fresh, and a flatbread with grilled eggplant, garlic yoghurt, onions and pomegranate molasses. A particularly successful combination of flavors. The family atmosphere and smiling service make this restaurant an excellent choice for a lunch break in the medina. Please note: Restaurant La Famille is only open at lunchtime, making it an address to plan specifically for lunch.

Rooftop restaurants are among the most popular addresses in Marrakech, both for their views over the rooftops of the medina and for their special ambience at sunset. Most are concentrated in the medina, some offer good food, while others are especially worth a visit for their setting. Here is our selection of four rooftops we tested during our stay.
12. Café Clock (tested by our team)
Café Clock is much more than just a restaurant: it’s a cultural space that regularly hosts musical events, cooking workshops, storytelling sepctacles and concerts. During our visit, we were lucky enough to attend a concert featuring women singing traditional Moroccan songs. A truly authentic moment, in a warm and friendly setting. As for the food, we started with an invigorating beet and fresh celery juice, followed by a very tasty vegetable pastilla and a lamb tagine with prunes and grapes, melting and fragrant! Moroccan cuisine here is truly delicious, traditional with a modern twist. The address is also known for offering more international and creative dishes, in an open atmosphere that mixes locals, expatriates and travelers passing through. A good option for combining food and cultural discovery. The decor is colorful and modern. In short, we’ve fallen in love with this place, where it’s also pleasant to drop in for a juice.

In the heart of the medina, Café Arabe is a multi-level lounge-bar-restaurant whose main attraction is its panoramic terrace. We had lunch here and our opinion is nuanced: the Italian menu was disappointing during our visit, while the tajine was satisfactory. In all honesty, we recommend you come to Café Arabe mainly for the setting and the view. The interior decoration is superb, rather than for the complete dining experience. On the other hand, it’s a great place to enjoy a drink or cocktail in the late afternoon, take advantage of the rooftop at sunset and soak up the atmosphere of the medina from high above. Service is continuous from 11 a.m. to midnight, making it a safe bet at any time of day.

Restaurant Naranj is renowned for its fresh, fragrant Lebanese cuisine. The setting is just as appealing, and the rooftop is small but pleasant. We shared a grilled octopus, accompanied by a silky, well-seasoned homemade hummus. The traditional mezze plate – hummus, falafel, cheese cigars and more – was tasty and generous. The spirit is resolutely modern, with a cuisine that attracts both locals and travelers looking for a break from Moroccan cuisine. A good option if you want to vary the pleasures during your stay, in a relaxed and colorful atmosphere.

The tapenades served as starters are generous, and the vegetable tagine appealed to us with its soft, balanced flavors. It’s also for the view over the rooftops, the superb local mosque and the “riad table” spirit that this address deserves a detour. A delightful address!
