Riads in Marrakech – our opinion

Marrakech is without doubt the Moroccan city with the greatest diversity of riads. The medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, remains the preferred territory for these traditional houses built around a central patio, turned inwards away from the hustle and bustle of the alleyways. Hidden behind mysterious doors, these charming interiors will welcome you in a cool, peaceful atmosphere. We tested out several of the city’s riads and have come back with a selection we’re happy to share.

With a few exceptions, riads are generally not very accessible for disabled people, and have a lot of stairs. What’s more, located in the medina, they have no parking facilities.

If you’re looking for more modern hotels or options in contemporary neighborhoods, check out our article on the best hotels in Marrakech, which covers other areas of the city.

1. Riad Dar Darma

Riad Dar Darma - Why sleep there?

Why stay there?

Refined, theatrical and sumptuously decorated, Riad Dar Darma is, in our opinion, an exceptional address. Lovers of arts and crafts will appreciate the carved wooden ceilings, heavy drapes, antique furniture and colorful shades that create a cinematic setting. We were impressed by the hushed atmosphere of this establishment, where every room has a story to tell. The spacious, elegant suites combine comfort and practicality. There’s also a traditional hammam and a sunny terrace with swimming pool. Located close to the Marrakech Museum and the Secret Garden, Riad Dar Darma was a real “coup de coeur” for us. We warmly recommend this establishment if you’re looking for a luxurious and unique stay in the heart of the medina.

2. Riad Al Moussika

Riad Al Moussika - Why sleep there?

Why stay there?

Former home of the Pasha of Marrakech, Riad Al Moussika is one of those places where history and Moroccan refinement meet. Its majestic atmosphere can be read in the details. Large volumes, colorful zelliges, carved wood and a patio with a turquoise swimming pool. We loved the elegance of this establishment with less than 10 rooms. An intimate, personalized experience guaranteed! The El Pepenero restaurant, renowned for its original combination of Italian and Moroccan cuisine, is also well worth a visit. You’ll be ideally located in the Mellah district, just a stone’s throw from Jemaa el-Fna Square, while enjoying the peace and quiet of a characterful riad. We loved it!

Why stay there?

North of the medina, we discovered Riad Kbour & Chou, a haven of peace with an intimate, refined atmosphere. Housed in a completely renovated traditional house, this riad combines Moroccan authenticity, meticulous design and a personalized welcome. The inner courtyard, the patio-garden and the warm atmosphere are just some of the features that won us over. You’ll find a calm setting just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of the souks. The freshly prepared breakfast is also a highlight. We also liked the small swimming pool on the roof terrace, where you can cool off in the hottest hours of the day. A place full of taste and charm which, as it did for us, will win you over!

6. Riad Jonan & Spa

Riad Jonan & Spa - Why stay there?

Why stay there?

Located in the Kasbah district, Riad Jonan & Spa is a lovely place to stay. We liked the mix of traditional elements – tadelakt, wrought-iron lanterns, shaded patio – and modern touches that give the place a soft, restful ambience. The terrace is ideal for a drink at the end of the day. One of the highlights of the place is also its spa, Maison Tui Na, an institution in Marrakech and other cities (notably Paris). We loved being massaged there and recommend the experience. You’ll be well placed to visit the nearby Palais El Badî and the Saadian Tombs. What’s more, the excellent value for money offered by this establishment makes it a pleasant option if you’re looking for a peaceful stay combining comfort and authenticity.

The rooms are spacious, and some have private patios. We were won over by the view from the roof terrace, which houses a restaurant and a friendly bar. There’s also another restaurant on the first floor. Don’t miss the spa with its hammam, sauna and fitness center. Located in the medina, just a 2-minute walk from Place Jamaâ El Fna, Riad Hôtel Sherazade is ideally situated in our opinion. The view from the roof terrace overlooks the Koutoubia mosque, the symbol of Marrakech. You’ll also appreciate the rooms, overlooking the patio and decorated in traditional Moroccan style, which are all air-conditioned. A must if you’re coming in summer! You’ll also find a spa and sauna here, as well as an outdoor swimming pool. What’s more, the establishment is accessible to people with reduced mobility, a feature rarely available in medina riads.
