Why visit Rabat’s Medina?

Is the Medina worth it? Our opinion:

Yes, Rabat’s Medina is well worth a visit. We were seduced by its serene, authentic atmosphere, which contrasts sharply with the more sprawling, touristy medinas of other major cities on Maroc.
You’ll appreciate the colorful spectacle it offers as much as the various places of interest it shelters. It’s one of the best things to do in Rabat!

Best time to visit

Rabat’s Medina can be visited all year round. If you want to avoid the crowds, it’s best to visit in the morning, when the stores are just opening and the atmosphere is more peaceful.

Rabat Medina - Best time to visit

Length of visit and main difficulties

Allow between 1h and 3h to explore the whole of Rabat’s Medina.
This time will allow you to discover the various markets, admire the ramparts and stroll through the Mellah district, the old Jewish quarter.

There’s nothing difficult about it other than getting lost in the narrow streets – and that’s the charm of the visit! Unlike other Moroccan medinas, you won’t be constantly approached by impromptu guides, which makes the experience all the more enjoyable.
Please note, however, that some streets have stairs, and the cobbled surface can make access difficult for wheelchair users.

Schedules and rates

Rabat’s Medina is open every day of the week.
Shops and businesses generally follow traditional Moroccan hours, opening around 9am and closing around 6pm.

Access to the medina itself is entirely free, and you’ll only have to pay for what you buy in the stores. Remember to bring change and cash for your shopping.

Catering

There are many dining options in and around Rabat’s Medina. We discovered both stalls where you can eat on the run and more refined restaurants hidden away in old traditional mansions. Most of the establishments are concentrated on avenue Mohammed V, the main pedestrian thoroughfare linking the Medina streetcar stop and avenue Lalou, marking the northern boundary of the old town.

An exceptional architectural heritage

Rabat’s Medina boasts a rich architectural heritage that bears witness to its past. Just look up! The finely carved wooden roofs add a touch of refinement to the whole, and the natural light filtered through moucharabiehs draws elegant shadows on the cobbled floor.

You’ll also discover flower-filled patios and mosaic fountains, adding a touch of poetry to your walk!
Photo enthusiasts, take the time to observe these discreet little spectacles…

Last but not least, some of the medina’s streets reveal facades in vibrant hues. Between carved wooden shutters, doors adorned with copper knockers and wrought-iron balconies, every detail seems made to be photographed!

Different crafts on show

Beyond its elegant architecture, Rabat’s medina beckons with its lively, colorful souks, where every stall is brimming with treasures. Here, visitors are treated to a veritable profusion of colors and materials: finely chiseled lamps, vibrantly patterned Berber carpets, ceramics and decorative wickerwork.
If you’re a fan of jewelry and leather goods, be sure to make a detour to the Souk Es Sebbat, renowned for its specialized stalls, where you’ll find leather shoes in every color!

Médina de Rabat - Spotlight on handicrafts

Are you familiar with foundouks? Foundouks are ancient caravanserais, merchant inns that once welcomed traders and travellers from all over the country. Conceived as true trading centers, they combined storage spaces, craftsmen’s workshops and lodgings for passing merchants.
During our visit, we discovered the Ben Aissa foundouk, specialized in leatherworking. Built in the XVIIᵉ century during the reign of Moulay Ismaïl, it is said to have been built by the daughter of the minister Ben Aicha. Its functional architecture bears witness to its essential role in the local economy: on the first floor, 36 stores, while upstairs, 36 rooms provided accommodation for merchants.

Avenue des Consuls: the beating heart of Rabat’s medina

During your stroll, you’re bound to come across Avenue des Consuls, one of the most emblematic streets in Rabat’s medina. Its name dates back to the XVIIᵉ century, when foreign diplomats were forced to reside here. At that time, piracy was an integral part of the local economy, and the town of Salé le Neuf (Rabat) was an active slave-taking center. Instead of being enslaved, Christian captives had to be bought back by their country’s consuls, who had a dedicated budget for such negotiations. For reasons of convenience, these diplomats settled just a few steps from the Souk El Ghezel, where the auctions took place.
Today, the Avenue des Consuls retains its former dynamism, but fortunately for other reasons! It is now home to the Souk Tahti, or more precisely, the Carpet Souk.

The Mellah, a district steeped in history

And don’t miss Rabat’s old Jewish quarter, known as the Mellah. Created in 1808 under the reign of Sultan Moulay Slimane, this district was a dynamic economic center for many years. It was distinguished by its own way of life, different from that of Muslims.
It had its own markets and services, freedom of worship and administrative autonomy. Fortified and guarded by royal soldiers, it was closed every night by a strict curfew. Its proximity to the royal residence reflected the importance of Jews in the economy and the court, where they often held influential positions under the official protection of the sultan. Today, the silent alleyways of the Mellah contrast with its rich past. The exodus of the 1950s emptied the neighborhood of its community, and the creation of the State of Israel emptied the neighborhood of its community, but its imprint remains.

Rabat medina - Le Chellah

Other not-to-be-missed discoveries in Rabat’s medina

Venture into the medina’s maze of alleyways, and you’ll discover other points of interest. First, you can admire the minaret of the Great Merenid Mosque, dating from the 14th century and since rebuilt.

Rabat Medina - Mosque

The medina is also marked by its impressive ramparts, which tell the story of the city’s various waves of settlement. To the west, the 12thᵉ century Almohad walls, erected under Yacoub El Mansour, bear witness to the dynasty’s ambition. Further south, the Andalusian Wall, built in the XVIIᵉ century by Moriscos expelled from Spain, separates the medina from the modern city. And let’s not forget the two monumental gates: Bab Laalou and Bab El Had, which open up the medina.

Finally, a stroll through the medina wouldn’t be complete without a pause to take in the incomparable view of the Kasbah des Oudayas. Oulja pottery complex (Rabat): visit + photos

Getting away from it all in Rabat? The Oulja potters’ complex is a must-see place to discover Moroccan crafts and enjoy local immersion.
Now under redevelopment, the site has been moved and will soon make way for a new Cité d’Artisanat et des Arts.
In this article, we share our impressions and tips based on our visit to the former Potters’ Complex in Oulja, just outside Rabat.

The wonders of the Complexe des Potiers d'Oulja in Rabat

This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.

Why visit the Ulaja Potters’ Complex

Is the complex worth it? Our opinion:

Yes, the Oulja potters’ complex is well worth a visit. Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s a great overview of Moroccan craftsmanship! We were impressed by the variety of creations and the skill of the craftsmen. For us, it’s one of the best things to do in Rabat!

Note to travelers: Since our visit in 2024, the site has been relocated to make way for a new City of Crafts and Arts, currently under construction. The photos and descriptions in this article therefore no longer accurately reflect the experience you’ll have on site once the project is completed. But if you’re curious about Moroccan craftsmanship, it’s always worth a visit!

Pottery complex, Ulaanbaatar - Is it worth it? Our opinion:

Why is the Ulaja Potters’ Complex famous?

The Oulja Potters’ Complex was much more than just a pottery market: it was a veritable conservatory ofMoroccan craftsmanship, renowned for the diversity and quality of its traditional pottery at affordable prices. Far from standardized spaces, Oulja had a soul: in an organized jumble, you could stroll between the workshops and stalls, watch the craftsmen at work and discover a wide range of objects, witnesses to a know-how that was both ancestral and alive.

At the time of our visit, the complex was located on the banks of the Bouregreg river, on the site of the old marshes, a 15-minute drive from the Salé marina, but the site was demolished in 2024 as part of the redevelopment of the Bouregreg valley.
The site has therefore been temporarily relocated on the northern road leading to Kénitra.

Length of visit and main difficulties

Allow around 1h to 1h30 to explore the entire complex. We found this time sufficient for a leisurely stroll, watching the craftsmen at work and making a few purchases. A labyrinth of shapes and colors: the diversity of Ulaja pottery

When we visited the Oulja potters’ complex in 2024, we were immediately seduced by the singular layout of the site, with its lanes lined with stacked pottery, open kilns and open-air workshops. This colorful maze offers a striking visual spectacle, attesting to the fact that Oulja was the beating heart of Moroccan craftsmanship, where every alleyway resounded with the clatter of tools and exchanges between artisans.

Complexe des potiers, Oulja - A labyrinth of shapes and colors

We were also struck by the diversity of the creations on display along the way: large, generously-shaped vases in raw terracotta, ceramics with traditional Berber or Andalucia motifs, colorful tagines with perfectly aligned pointed lids. The wealth of styles reflects the incredible heritage of Moroccan craftsmanship, where each piece tells a story.

An out-of-time stroll: meet the artisans

In addition to the colorful and pleasant stroll around the Oulja site, meeting the artisans is a captivating experience. Depending on the time of your visit, you may have the opportunity to observe the precision with which each piece of pottery is shaped by hand.
In some workshops, traditional kilns, still used according to ancestral methods, transform clay into unique pieces. A visit to Ulja means much more than admiring the beautiful pottery: it means contributing to the preservation of ancestral know-how, supporting responsible tourism and contributing to the dynamism of the local economy.

Complexe des potiers, Oulja - Ancestral skills that stand the test of time: meet the craftsmen

Oulja, a know-how on borrowed time: between tradition and modernization

We highly recommend a visit to the potters’ complex, even if you’re not a craftsman by trade. Moroccan pottery is much more than just a decorative object: it embodies a unique heritage, shaped by generations of craftsmen. Observing their precise gestures and the techniques they have handed down over the centuries is also a way of showcasing a living, evolving know-how.

Potters' complex, Ulja

However, with the demolition of the old Ulja site to make way for a more modern center, it’s hard to say whether the experience will be the same as when we visited in 2024. Let’s hope that the new Cité d’Artisanat et des Arts, currently under construction (more info here), will preserve the authenticity of the craft and give small-scale artisans the place they deserve.

A building with Arabo-Andalusian influences

As soon as we arrived, we were impressed by the museum’s majestic all-white neo-Moorish façade. This first architectural impression revolves around an elegant double-arched colonnade, complemented by delicate clerestories that filter the light beautifully. You’ll also notice that the monument, despite its traditional appearance, incorporates an ecological approach with its discreetly installed solar panels.

Don’t miss the fact that behind this traditional façade are hidden corridors, which in reality are veritable open-air art galleries. Here you’ll find large-scale frescoes by artists such asIlias Selfati, Ghizlane Agzenaï and Moustapha Zoufri.
We particularly enjoyed this colorful and vibrant introduction to the world of art!

Monumental sculptures to welcome visitors

Before entering the museum, take time to admire the remarkable sculptures that adorn the forecourt. We were particularly fascinated by this open-air collection, which demonstrates the museum’s mission to make art accessible.
You’ll discover, among other things:

  • La Machine à rêver by Niki de Saint Phalle, one of the world’s greatest female artists, whose brightly colored Nanas immediately captivate the eye.
  • The majestic Cheval by Botero, a Colombian artist whose style is instantly recognizable with its generous forms (on the right in the photo below).
  • The mighty 3.20m-high Masai Warrior by Senegalese artistOusmane Sow(left in photo).

You’ll also find a fire sculpture in metal by Farid Belkahia, a leading figure in Moroccan art. We also appreciated the marble sculptures by Ikram Kabbaj, also from Morocco. This triptych of enigmatic shapes harks back to the origins of humanity.
This forecourt alone shows the plurality of forms and nationalities that the museum aims to bring together!

Discovering the museum’s works: between Moroccan art and international influences

It’s important to note that we visited the museum in 2024, and that the display of works will probably be different during your visit. The museum regularly renews its exhibitions to offer visitors a constantly enriched experience.

Group exhibition: Cuba’s art scene in the spotlight

We began our tour with a visit to the group exhibition featuring various Cuban artists. Entitled ” Across the Atlantic: Cuban Art “, this exhibition explored the evolution of Cuban art through the ages. We enjoyed discovering this vibrant scene, through a varied selection of works, mixing established artists such as Wifredo Lam and emerging talents like Esterlo Segura.
We also appreciated the diversity of forms represented!

Promoting Moroccan artists: Abdellatif Laâbi in the spotlight

One of the museum’s missions is to showcase the vitality of the Moroccan art scene. When we visited, we were particularly struck by the exhibition “Un poète passe”, dedicated to Abdellatif Laâbi, poet, publisher and committed painter.
This retrospective looked both at his founding role in the magazine Souffles, which shaped artistic thought at Maroc in the 1960s, and explored the artist’s many facets. We loved the mix of archival documents, publications, videos and even his painting experience!
Through this tribute, the museum underlined Laâbi’s impact on contemporary Moroccan creation, inscribing his work in a dialogue between commitment and artistic expression.

An international outlook: New York artists in the spotlight

Finally, we rounded off our visit with the discovery of four major artists on the New York scene: Helen and Brice Marden, Francesco Clemente and Julian Schnabel, testifying to the museum’s international ambitions. We particularly enjoyed the works of Helen Marden, integrating organic elements such as shells and feathers into colorful compositions, and the symbolic universe of Francesco Clemente.
The paintings below illustrate his style, blending mystical traditions from India with contemporary influences.

Salé Beach (Rabat): visit + photos

By Clara, Region Lovers | June 17, 2025 | no intrusive ads, no sponsored content, just some affiliate links - if you use them, we get a small commission (read more)

After visiting Rabat, why not take advantage of the popular and peaceful Salé beach?
Stretching along the Atlantic, Salé beach offers an exceptional panorama: on one side, the majestic silhouette of Rabat’s medina, encircled by its ramparts, and on the other, the town of Salé in the background. You’ll enjoy this beach just as much in summer, when you can swim, as in winter, when you can take a stroll and admire the Bouregreg river flowing into the ocean.

Here are our useful tips for planning your visit to Salé beach in the city of Rabat.

Enjoy the Salé Beach in Rabat

This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.

Is Salé beach worth it?

Yes, it’s a beautiful beach that deserves either an afternoon lazing on the warm sand or a long, contemplative stroll! We were seduced by its local atmosphere and the panoramic views it offers over both Rabat and Salé.

Salé Beach - Panoramic view of Rabat

Type of beach

Sand or no sand?

The soil on Salé beach is thick brown sand. We’ve found that its texture provides a stable base for your towel or parasol. This differentiates it from the finer sand beaches found elsewhere on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. The only drawback? The beach is not very clean in places.

Plage de Salé - Type de Sable

Swimming conditions and supervision

Care should be taken when swimming on this beach. We’ve noticed a lot of wind to the north of the beach, particularly near the mouth of the Bouregreg.
Strong currents can also occur, making swimming more difficult.
Please note that the beach is not supervised. Be particularly vigilant, especially if you have a family or little swimming experience.

Plage de Salé - Swimming conditions and surveillance

Installations

Unfortunately, Salé beach has no facilities. We didn’t see any showers or toilets on the beach. Also, deckchair and parasol hire and PRM access are not available on this public beach.
You’ll need to bring your own equipment if you want to spend several hours there.

  • It lies north of the mouth of the Bouregreg, the river that separates the twin cities of Rabat and Salé.

Access by car and parking

To get to Salé beach from Rabat city center, allow around 15 minutes’ drive. From Casablanca, allow 1h30 drive.

Please note that there is no dedicated parking or spaces available on the avenue bordering the beach. We advise you to park at the Salé marina and walk to the beach, which will also allow you to explore the surrounding area.

Access from the parking lot

From the Salé marina parking lot, it’s a short walk to the beach.

Public transport access

There is no public transport that will take you directly from Rabat to the beach. The nearest streetcar stop is in the medina (R-Bab Lamrissa), from where it’s a 15-minute walk to the beach.

For a unique experience, we recommend a traditional boat trip from the Rabat marina. This fast, picturesque crossing of the Bouregreg offers a unique view of both cities.

Special features

Dog

Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach.

Reduced mobility access

There are no facilities for disabled access. We found that there were no ramps or suitable paths to reach the water’s edge. The only alternative is to enjoy the waterfront promenade from the marina.

With children

The beach offers plenty of space, which is great for beach games. We saw families taking advantage of the vast expanse to play ball or build sandcastles.

Plage de Salé - With children

Naturism

It is not possible to practice naturism on this beach. We would like to remind you that Maroc is a country whose culture retains traditional values, and where decent dress is expected on public beaches.

Eating out

There are no restaurants on site or in the immediate vicinity of the beach. We strongly advise you to take something to eat or drink if you plan to stay the whole day! The easiest way to find dining options is to head for the Marina de Salé, where you’ll have a choice of several gourmet addresses.

Hotels

Part of theFairmont Marina Rabat Hotel overlooks the beach. During our stay at this establishment, we appreciated the ease of access: just cross the street to reach the promenade and then the beach. The hotel also boasts a breathtaking view of the coast and the Bouregreg, making it an ideal spot for sunsets!

Andalucia Gardens of the Oudayas (Rabat): visit + photos

By Clara, Region Lovers | March 12, 2025 | no intrusive ads, no sponsored content, just some affiliate links - if you use them, we get a small commission (read more)

If you’re visiting Rabat, don’t miss a visit to the Andalucia Gardens of the Kasbah des Oudayas. This verdant setting offers a bucolic break between fountains, flowering alleys and fruit trees. A place of serenity, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, not to be missed! Here are some useful tips to help you prepare for your visit and have a wonderful time.

A bucolic stroll through the Andalucia Gardens of the Oudayas in Rabat

This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.

Why visit the Andalucia Gardens of the Oudayas?

Are Rabat’s Jardins des Oudayas worth a visit? Our opinion:

The Jardin des Oudayas is worth a visit for its soothing stroll through the heart of the Kasbah.
It’s also a garden linked to the history of Maroc and the French protectorate.
Laid out in 1912, on the orders of General Lyautey, on the site of the former méchouar (royal courtyard), it was architect Maurice Tranchant de Lunel, the first inspector of Monuments Historiques, who drew up the plans. In 1919, landscape gardener Jean Claude Nicolas Forestier gave it its current appearance, drawing inspiration from the Andalucia gardens of Sevilla and the Alhambra.
A perfect marriage of heritage and nature!

Our favorite moment

We particularly appreciated the peaceful atmosphere of the Jardin des Oudayas, making it a refuge from the hustle and bustle of Rabat. The sensation of entering a cocoon of greenery in the middle of the city won us over.

From the station, you can take the bus (line 102, stop Mosque Ashohada) and walk 15min to the Kasbah des Oudayas.
However, we recommend that you take a cab that will drop you off directly in front of the kasbah, as this is the most convenient way to access the garden.

Useful tips: duration, schedules, difficulties…

Best time to visit, opening hours and prices

We recommend that you come in spring to take advantage of the garden’s blossoming season and mild temperatures, which also make for a more pleasant walk.

The gardens are open daily from 10am to 6pm, closing on Tuesdays. Admission is free.

Length of visit and main difficulties

Allow around 30 minutes to walk through the gardens at a leisurely pace. The whole site is flat, making it easy to walk around, but the cobbled floors are uneven and can be uncomfortable for wheelchair users.
You’ll notice that the layout of the flowerbeds means that most of the garden can be enjoyed without any particular difficulty.

Advice on how to visit

There is no imposed direction of visit. Let your eye be your guide and observe the different species!

Visiting with children

We didn’t notice any special features for children, but they should enjoy the garden’s colorful plunge. Join them on a snail hunt!

Catering, Toilets and Facilities

There are no toilets in the gardens, but you’ll find them at the Musée National de la Parure just across the street.
There are no restaurants in the gardens, and it is strictly forbidden to eat there.
However, the Café Maure, a 2-minute walk away, is a Rabat institution. Despite its touristy feel, we recommend a break to enjoy a mint tea with pastries, overlooking the Salé marina.

A haven of peace in the heart of the Kasbah

Harmonious architecture inspired by Andalucia gardens

The structure of the garden is reminiscent of a riad, a traditional Moroccan house organized around a patio: intimate yet open.
The garden is laid out in four flowerbeds bordered by a variety of vegetation, arranged according to a geometric plan that reveals the Andalucia influence. We remained contemplative in front of this spatial organization, reminiscent of the famous gardens of Sevilla. You’ll notice that each corner of the garden offers a different perspective. Special mention must be made of the wooden pergolas supported by carved stone beams, which create welcome areas of shade on sunny days!

An oasis of freshness

Water plays a fundamental role in garden design, in keeping with the tradition of Islamic gardens. Water is first and foremost utilitarian, allowing crops to be tended. You’ll find a basin for irrigating the rectangular flowerbeds, as well as a noria (wheel) and its basin.

Jardins andalalous des Oudayas, Rabat - The presence of water

But water also has a spiritual dimension: in the Islamic religion, it symbolizes purity and the renewal of the soul. Its soothing murmur, omnipresent in the garden, invites meditation…

A sensory walk

A green setting in the heart of the Kasbah ramparts

What strikes you when you enter this garden is the impression of finding a timeless refuge. We particularly appreciated the contrast between the large green plants and the ochre walls of the Kasbah standing out in the background.
Pay attention to the other charming details that make up the visit: a carved door, mosaic tiles or simply birdsong!

A botanical collection

During your walk, you’ll also appreciate the sensory immersion offered by the varied vegetation, with its intoxicating colors and fragrances.
We watched with interest as century-old olive trees grew alongside orange, tamarisk, rose, laurel, banana, datura and lemon trees. This plant diversity creates a veritable palette of colors that changes with the seasons.

Located halfway between Casablanca and Rabat, Bouznika beach is one of the most popular in the country. And if it’s so popular and frequented throughout the summer, it’s as much for its beauty as for its cleanliness. We were seduced by its turquoise-blue waters and festive atmosphere during the summer months. In this article, you’ll find our photos and tips for making the most of your visit to Bouznika beach.

Farniente at Bouznika beach near Rabat

This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.

Is Bouznika beach worth it?

Yes, it’s a beautiful beach and well worth a visit. Its turquoise-blue water was a particular highlight, and left a strong impression on us during our visit. We particularly appreciated the cleanliness of the area, which explains why Bouznika has been awarded the Blue Flag eco-label 10 years running.

The festive atmosphere and the wide range of water sports on offer make it an ideal place for everyone to relax. Families can take advantage of the seasonal lifeguard surveillance, while water sports enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them entertained.

Sand or no sand?

The beach at Bouznika is made up of fine golden sand. We enjoyed walking barefoot, as the texture was particularly pleasant.

Swimming conditions and supervision

The water in Bouznika is relatively deep, which requires a certain amount of vigilance, especially for novice swimmers. We have noticed that there are areas with larger waves where caution is called for. The presence of a few boats close to the shore also means you need to be careful when swimming.

Signs indicate that the beach is supervised during the summer season, offering added safety for bathers. However, even when lifeguards are present, we recommend that you remain vigilant, especially if you’re coming with your family.

Installations

Bouznika beach has showers, so you can rinse off after a swim. There are no public toilets on the beach, but you’ll find them on one of the adjacent streets. For added comfort, umbrellas and deckchairs can be rented on site.

Bouznika beach can be a pleasant destination for families, thanks in particular to the water activities available for hire (kayaking, jet-skiing) and the nearby playgrounds (soccer, basketball), which are sure to please children. A Twenty-one grocery store is available in the streets adjacent to the beach.

Hotels

If you want to stay close to Bouznika beach, here are our recommendations:

  • Hotel The View Bouznika, with several swimming pools and a wellness center.
  • The Hotel Riad des plages, which we particularly appreciated for its authentic setting.
