Useful tips: duration, schedules, eating…

Best time to visit

Any time is a good time! It’s not crowded.

Length of visit and main difficulties

Allow about 45 minutes to explore the ground floor and upper floors of the riad. The ground floor is accessible, but access to the upper floors for people with limited mobility is limited by the narrow staircases and the lack of an elevator.

Advice on how to visit

We suggest you start on the ground floor, which is the exhibition space and gallery, to enjoy the works of art brut, and then head up to the first floor, which also features artworks. The second floor, meanwhile, reveals the residence of artist François Réal, where everything has been created by artists! There’s an admission fee, but it’s well worth it. You’ll discover superb, creative furniture and a unique atmosphere. This tour allows you to fully appreciate the diversity of the place without missing a thing.

Visiting with children

We didn’t find any activities specifically designed for young visitors at the Centre d’Art Real Mogador. The visit focuses on a contemplative exploration, but the colors of the artworks and the venue may appeal to younger visitors!

Schedules and rates

  • Hours: Every day except Monday
  • Closed: Monday
  • Adult admission: Free for the ground floor; 50 DH (access to the 2nd floor; a fee is required to take photos in order to respect the artists’ copyrights.)

A historic riad transformed into a creative space

A former consulate that has been repurposed in the heart of the medina

As the owner and artist François Real told us during our visit, the building that now houses the Centre d’Art Real Mogador was once the Italian consulate in Essaouira. This diplomatic function underscores the historical significance of the site, which is nestled within the dense and authentic urban fabric of the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Purchased by the artist a few years ago, the space is now a gallery (all the works on the ground floor are for sale) and Mr. Real’s home. Under his guidance, the space also serves as an artist residency, welcoming artists who come to create and find inspiration on site.

A traditional yet contemporary riad

We found this riad to be truly unique. You’ll notice its traditional architecture—the patio, arcades, and columns—but you’ll be surprised by its artistic transformation. Vibrant colors and geometric patterns adorn the floors and walls, breaking away from the usual Moroccan style. These striking hues enhance the dialogue between local architecture and contemporary artistic sensibility, as embodied by the works on display and the artist who owns the riad.

Works of art brut and contemporary art

The art gallery on the ground floor

On the ground floor of the Real Mogador Art Center, we discovered a collection in the art gallery dedicated primarily to art brut, naïve art, African art, and contemporary art. This first level offers an immersive experience in a joyful world where spontaneous and colorful expression takes center stage.

True diversity is evident in the works, which explore a variety of mediums, from sculpture and installations to painting and art furniture. Both Moroccan and international artists are featured, and all the works are for sale. Why not take home a souvenir?

The artistic furnishings and decor on the top floor

We then followed François Real upstairs and discovered the incredible artistic furniture and decor on the second floor. Here, every piece of furniture is unique and goes beyond mere utility to become a work of art in its own right.

Take a look, for example, at the tiles or the light fixtures designed by artists and crafted by Moroccan artisans. We also really loved the kitchen and bathroom with their curved lines, as well as the armchairs and chairs—all of which are one-of-a-kind!

A vibrant program centered on artist residencies

Temporary Exhibitions and Collaborations

The Real Mogador Art Center is committed to collaborating with local and international partners. We believe our programming is dynamic! We organize temporary exhibitions. We also host artist residencies for both Moroccan and international artists, whether they are emerging or established.

Concerts, performances, and other cultural events

The Real Mogador Art Center offers a rich and varied cultural program that goes beyond simply visiting an exhibition: you can attend concerts, artistic performances, and poetry readings there. The center also organizes workshops and lectures, fostering dialogue between artists and the public and creating a dynamic space for exchange in the heart of Essaouira’s medina.
