Riads in Fez: What You Need to Know Before Booking

There is a particularly wide selection of riads in Fez, especially in the heart of the medina. You’ll find everything from small, intimate guesthouses to former palaces converted into luxury accommodations, complete with patios, terraces, swimming pools, or spas. Some feature very traditional Moroccan decor, while others combine zellige tiles, carved wood, and more contemporary design elements. Since comfort levels and amenities vary widely, it’s important to carefully compare their locations and amenities before making a choice.

1. Hotel Riad Dar Lys (5 stars)

Hotel Riad Dar Lys - room

Our review

Tucked away in the heart of the medina, Riad Dar Lys is, in our opinion, one of the best places to stay in Fez. Our experience there was unforgettable in every way! This architectural gem elegantly blends Moroccan tradition with contemporary touches in a particularly refined setting.

We were amazed by the splendid carved wooden ceilings that adorn the various rooms of the riad. As soon as we arrived, the warm welcome—with mint tea and freshly squeezed orange juice—immersed us in Moroccan hospitality.

We were also charmed by the attention to detail in our room: modern furniture, intricately carved wooden cabinets, hand-embroidered pillowcases, and works of art all blend harmoniously together. You’ll also appreciate the luxurious bathroom finished in tadelakt, a traditional lime-based plaster that’s emblematic of Moroccan craftsmanship. Finally, don’t miss the rooftop terrace, its pool, and its superb view over the rooftops of Fez!

Hotel Riad Dar Laura - roof terrace

Our review

Want to stay in a historic riad that’s been completely renovated with remarkable attention to detail? Head to Riad Dar Laura! We were charmed by its elegant decor, which tastefully blends traditional elements with contemporary touches.

The spacious rooms are adorned with elegant moldings, which you’ll even find on the bathroom faucets. We particularly loved how they complemented the delicate black-and-white embroidery on our bedspread and pillowcases. Moroccan furniture, carved wooden shutters, and wrought-iron accents round out this authentic and tasteful atmosphere.

Mohamed, the very friendly owner, personally ensured our comfort throughout our stay. The traditional breakfast is served in the light-filled central patio, adorned with fountains and several handmade caftans—the traditional garments worn during major ceremonies.

Be sure to look up to admire the moldings on the columns and arches, as well as the magnificent ceilings crafted by local artisans. We didn’t know where to look first—every space is so full of beautiful details!

3. Riad Relais & Châteaux Hotel in Fez (5 stars)

Hôtel Riad Relais et Châteaux Fès - interior lounge

Our review

Among the most beautiful places to stay in the old medina, the Riad Fès – Relais & Châteaux particularly caught our attention. This luxury hotel elegantly embodies the fusion of Arab-Andalusian opulence and the Moroccan art of living.

We were captivated by this majestic palace, a remarkable example of Hispano-Moorish architecture organized around four patios, each with its own unique atmosphere. Take the time to admire the carved doors, the walls covered in zellige tiles, the stucco arcades, and the marble basins that make up this particularly refined setting. In the Andalusian courtyard, the intricate moldings, the illuminated fountain, and the melodies played on the oud—a traditional stringed instrument—create a spellbinding atmosphere.

We also had dinner at Restaurant Gayza, the riad’s gourmet restaurant. There, Chef Lalla Abida creates exquisite authentic Moroccan cuisine, drawing on a tradition passed down from mother to daughter for several generations. Imagine savoring these dishes paired with a selection of Moroccan and French wines, while the notes of Arab-Andalusian music fill the air… A timeless experience in a sumptuous setting!

Our review

A true haven of peace in the heart of the old medina, Riad Al Makan Fès & Spa is, in our opinion, a wonderful place to stay. This traditional residence harmoniously blends iconic architectural elements, such as zellige and tadelakt, with more contemporary amenities.

The rooms, decorated in a style that is both understated and traditional, feature soft colors and local handicrafts. We particularly liked the colorful mosaics that adorn the lower portions of the walls and lend a lot of character to the overall look.

Spacious and elegantly decorated, our room showcased Morocco’s rich artisanal craftsmanship. We loved its four-poster bed, its refined moldings, and the handcrafted pieces that gave it so much character.
