Chefchaouen

1. Chefchaouen, the blue city of the Rif

Chefchaouen - Blue alleys of the medina

Why do we recommend this tour?

Chefchaouen is undoubtedly the best-known excursion from Tétouan, and for good reason: its alleyways painted entirely in shades of blue and white create a visual setting that is unique in Morocco. Here, we discovered a town on a human scale, set against the backdrop of the Rif mountains, where local crafts, murals and the tranquil rhythm of the inhabitants create an atmosphere hard to find elsewhere. The drive from Tetouan takes you through already beautiful mountain scenery, which adds to the experience. Stop off at Lake Sed Nakhla Dam, a marvel on the way from Tetouan to Chefchaouen! And if you don’t want to drive, there are organized tours from Tetouan that allow you to reach it without logistical worries – see options.

Chefchaouen - Place Outa el-Hammam
Place Outa el-Hammam

What you will see

  • The medina and its blue alleyways adorned with murals by local artists
  • Place Outa el-Hammam, the lively heart of the town, bordered by the 15th-century Kasbah and its Great Mosque
  • The Kasbah and its ethnographic museum, which exhibits traditional objects and testimonies of Rifa culture – opt for a guided tour of the town
  • The Ras El Ma spring and its small waterfalls right in the middle of town, ideal for a refreshing break.
  • Souks, including hand-woven Rifa carpets, spices and natural cosmetics
  • The Rif Al-Andalucia Mosque, built in the 16th century by Andalucia refugees, is recognizable by its hexagonal minaret.
Chefchaouen - Ras El Ma spring

How much time should I allow?

  • Distance from Tétouan: 1h30min drive
  • Recommended duration: a full day to explore the medina at your own pace, or two days with an overnight stay to enjoy the atmosphere after the day visitors have left.
  • By car: the 4-lane national road from Tetouan crosses the Rif mountains, the last 20 kilometers are on a narrower road with twists and turns.
  • Organized tours: several options from Tetouan – see available tours
  • Best time: spring/autumn; summer possible, but crowded and hot – avoid rainy days, as the road is dangerous.

2. The Aïn Zarka waterfall, a mountain oasis

Aïn Zarka waterfall - Tétouan

Why do we recommend this tour?

What a mountain wonderland! Aïn Zarka is the closest nature getaway to Tétouan – just 10km and 20min by car from the city center. We really appreciated the tranquility of the area and the superb shades of green and ochre in the surrounding landscape. It’s not a spectacular site in the tourist sense of the word: it’s above all a local breathing space, frequented by the people of Tétouan who come to walk, relax and enjoy the soothing sound of the water. The charm of the waterfall lies in its simplicity and the changing landscape with the seasons. We also liked the little store selling local honeys nearby, where a tasting session awaited us along the way! Our favorite? Flower honey!

Aïn Zarka waterfall - Surroundings

What you will see

  • A waterfall in a natural mountain setting, surrounded by rocks, riverside plants and small pools that vary according to the flow.
  • Panoramic views of the Rif foothills from certain vantage points
  • A café by the waterfall for a break
  • A store selling local honeys, with tasting facilities
  • Some hiking trails around the site (vigilance required depending on terrain and weather)
  • A small guarded parking lot nearby (bring change in MAD dhs for the guard).
Aïn Zarka waterfall - Nature walk

How much time should I allow?

  • Distance from Tetouan: 10km uphill, about 20min by car or local cab
  • Recommended duration: 1 to 2 hours, depending on whether you want to walk or just enjoy the surroundings.
  • Access: by car or local cab; very winding and narrow mountain road – driving recommended only for experienced people, avoid rainy days
  • Rates: free access
  • Accessibility: uneven ground around the waterfall, not suitable for people with reduced mobility; possible with young children, but you must be very vigilant (unsupervised area).
  • Accommodation available on site (camping and lodging available) – see options

3. Mediterranean coast beaches: Martil, M’diq, Fnideq and Marina Smir

Coastal beaches - Martil from Tétouan
Martil Beach

Why do we recommend this tour?

The Mediterranean coastline stretches just a few minutes from Tetouan, making it an ideal option for extending a day of cultural sightseeing with some time by the sea. We enjoyed the lively, family-friendly atmosphere of Martil, the nearest seaside resort, as well as the different atmospheres offered by M’diq, Fnideq and Marina Smir. Here, the interest is not in finding “spectacular” beaches, but in immersing oneself in the everyday life of Morocco’s northern seaside, with its late-night strolls, children’s games and changing light on the Mediterranean.

M'diq Beach - Mediterranean coast from Tétouan
M’diq beach, our favourite place to stay

What you will see

  • Martil (15min by car): Tétouan’s closest beach, long stretch of sand, flat promenade, playgrounds, restaurants and cafés along the corniche. Lifeguard surveillance in summer.Hôtel Omeya at the end of the promenade is a good base for enjoying the sea.
  • M’diq: a well-tended promenade, a family beach lined with cafés, a very pleasant end-of-day atmosphere. The Restaurant La Méditerranée by Robuchon, a gourmet table on stilts facing the sea, is located here – an address we recommend for a culinary experience apart.Hotel Tamuda Bay Beach & Spa is a good option for an overnight stay.
  • Fnideq: lively local atmosphere, small ports and wide-open sea horizons, closer to the Ceuta border
  • Marina Smir: more attractive surroundings, marina, restaurants and calm waters popular with yachtsmen.
Fnideq beach - Mediterranean coast
Fnideq beach, the most beautiful in our eyesx

How much time should I allow?

  • Distance from Tétouan: 15min (Martil) to 30min (Fnideq, Marina Smir) by car
  • Recommended duration: 1h to one day, depending on your program and the number of beaches visited (walking, swimming, meals…).
  • These resorts are easy to visit by car, either one after the other or separately, depending on your itinerary.

4. On the border of 2 continents: Ceuta (Sebta), the Spanish enclave

Ceuta (Sebta) - Excursion from Tétouan

Why do we recommend this tour?

Ceuta, or Sebta in Arabic, is a Spanish enclave on the African continent, 1 hour’s drive from Tétouan. This territory of just a few square kilometers blends imposing fortifications, Iberian influences and Mediterranean heritage in striking contrast. Here, you’ll find a singular destination: a place where Europe and Africa coexist in a tangible and visible way, in architecture, gastronomy and the rhythm of life. It’s an excursion that takes you off the beaten track, posing challenging geographical and historical questions. For visitors wishing to discover the old town with a guide, organized tours are available – see options.

What you will see

  • Historic fortifications and architecture combining Andalucia and Moroccan influences
  • Mediterranean beaches within easy reach of the city
  • A Spanish-style town center, with shops, restaurants and cafés
  • A unique geographic gateway between Africa and Europe’s sphere of influence

How much time should I allow?

  • Distance from Tétouan: 1h drive
  • Recommended duration: half to full day
  • Important: a valid passport is essential for crossing the border; depending on your nationality, a visa may also be required. Find out more in advance. Please note that, although Ceuta is in Spain, it is not part of the Schengen area for goods.
  • Crossing the border by car can be a lengthy process (sometimes several hours waiting at customs, especially on the return journey to Morocco). For a day trip, our tip is to leave your car in a guarded parking lot in Fnideq and cross the border on foot. Passport control is much faster. Once on the Spanish side, take a local bus or cab to Ceuta city center in just a few minutes!
  • By car from Tétouan via Fnideq; allow time for border crossing, as times may vary.

For added peace of mind, opt for a guided tour!

5. The ancient city buried in the plain: the archaeological site of Tamuda

Tamuda archaeological site - Excursion from Tétouan

Why do we recommend this tour?

Tamuda is an ancient Mauretanian, and later Roman, city whose remains are located just a few kilometers from the center of Tetouan. We haven’t yet had the chance to visit the site, but we do know that it is a direct and valuable complement to a visit to the Tetouan Archaeological Museum, whose collections display numerous objects from the Tamuda excavations. The site is still being excavated, giving it a rare living, scientific dimension. For visitors interested in the archaeology or ancient history of northern Morocco, this site places Tetouan in a historical continuum that predates the city of Andalucia by several centuries.

What you will see

  • Remains of a RomanoMauritan settlement, including military structures still being excavated
  • A rare glimpse of ancient occupation in northern Morocco, prior to the founding of Andalucia’s Tetouan city
  • A site that takes on its full meaning when combined with a visit to the Tetouan Archaeological Museum, where objects found on site are exhibited.

How much time should I allow?

  • Distance from Tétouan: a few kilometers, 20min by car
  • Recommended duration: 1 to 2 hours, depending on your interest in archaeology.
  • We recommend that you visit the Tetouan Archaeological Museum before or after your visit to get a better idea of the site.
  • Bring a hat and suncream, as there are few shady areas on these sites, as well as water for refreshment.

6. Tangier and the surrounding area: the great northern port city

Tangier - Excursion from Tetouan

Why do we recommend this tour?

Tangier is a port city rich in history, about 1h30min from Tétouan. We loved visiting it! As the gateway between Europe and Africa, it offers a radically different experience from Tetouan: more cosmopolitan, more vast, nourished by centuries of exchange between Mediterranean and African civilizations. We were swept away by the atmosphere of this crossroads city, where the hilltop Kasbah, the fine museums and the urban beach rub shoulders, forming a dense, lively whole. Allow a full day to take in its many facets. Guided tours departing from Tétouan allow you to reach the city without driving – see options.
Ideally, if you have more time, you should spend at least one night there.

Hercules Caves - Tangier
Hercules Caves

What you will see

  • The Kasbah and Medina, the historic heart of Tangier, founded by the Merinid dynasty in the 13th century (not forgetting its museums).
  • L’Espace d’exposition Ibn Battouta, a museum retracing the 29-year journey of the famous Moroccan explorer born in Tangiers in 1304 – our favorite.
  • The Grottes d’Hercule (Hercules Caves), a 30-minute drive from Tangier, which open spectacularly onto the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Cap Spartel lighthouse, a unique geographical point where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet
  • Tangier’s municipal beach, a long stretch of fine sand in the heart of the city
  • The American Legation Museum, remarkable for its history and collections tracing Moroccan-American relations.
Cap Spartel lighthouse - Tangier

How much time should I allow?

  • Distance from Tétouan: 1h30min drive
  • Recommended duration: one full day; two days if you wish to combine the city with surrounding sites (Cap Spartel, Grottes d’Hercule, Perdicaris Forest).
  • By car from Tétouan: the N2 road is direct and well signposted.
  • By bus: there are regular connections via CTM and Supratours.

7. Open-air museum: Asilah, the Atlantic city of artists

Asilah - Excursion from Tétouan

Why do we recommend this tour?

Asilah is a small town on the Atlantic coast, about 2 hours from Tétouan, which combines historical heritage, contemporary creativity and the seaside. We were charmed by this ancient fishermen’s town, whose whitewashed alleyways are covered each summer with murals created during the International Cultural Moussem Festival. The 15th-century Portuguese ramparts, the mausoleums facing the ocean and the Great Mosque with its octagonal minaret make up a coherent and singular setting. If you don’t have a car, there are organized excursions from Tangier to Asilah – see options.

Asilah - Medina murals

What you will see

  • The white medina with its colorful blue, green and yellow gates, whose cleanliness and chromatic harmony are striking from the moment you arrive.
  • The murals of the International Cultural Moussem Festival, renewed every summer by artists from all over the world
  • The 15th-century ramparts and the Caraquia viewpoint facing the Atlantic, one of the city’s finest panoramas
  • The marine cemetery with its mosaic-covered tombs and the mausoleums of Sidi Ahmed el-Mansour and Lalla Mennana
  • Al Kamra Tower, a symbol of 15th-century Portuguese defensive architecture
  • The main beach, directly accessible from the medina
Asilah - Remparts atlantique

How much time should I allow?

  • Distance from Tétouan: approx. 2 hours’ drive (N2 national road, then A5 freeway bypassing Tangiers)
  • Recommended duration: a full day; an overnight stay is possible and pleasant, as the city empties of visitors in the evening.
  • By car: the most practical route for combining Tangier and Asilah in the same day
  • By train: direct link from Tangiers, see details on the ONCF website, but less convenient and longer journey from Tetouan.

>> See our detailed article on Asilah <<

8. In the heart of the Rif: the Akchour waterfalls and their natural basins

Akchour waterfalls

Why do we recommend this tour?

The Akchour waterfalls, accessible from Chefchaouen, are one of the most popular nature walks in the Rif. From Tetouan, they can be reached via Chefchaouen, making it possible to combine the two destinations in a two-day trip. The trail, which winds through lush vegetation to waterfalls, offers natural pools and landscapes that will leave a lasting impression. We recommend that you include this site in a guided tour, as the mountain road is narrow with little visibility and many twists and turns – book your excursion. There are also small stalls on site where you can have lunch by the water.

What you will see

  • Spectacular waterfalls framed by unspoilt vegetation typical of the Talassemtane natural park
  • Natural pools, ideal for summer bathing
  • A hiking trail in the Rif mountains, accessible on foot from the site parking lot
  • Small local shops where you can have lunch on the spot

How much time should I allow?

  • Distance from Tétouan: approx. 1h45min to 2h drive via the N2 and R406 roads
  • Recommended duration: a full day from Tetouan, ideally combined with an overnight stay in Chefchaouen to enjoy both sites.
  • Access by car: very narrow mountain road, poor visibility in places – We do not recommend this route for inexperienced drivers or those not used to the winding roads of the Rif.
  • Guided tour: the safest and most practical solution – see options

Frequently asked questions about excursions from Tetouan

What’s the best excursion from Tetouan?

It all depends on your interests. For a strong cultural and visual experience, Chefchaouen remains our first choice: its proximity (1h30min drive) and the uniqueness of the blue city make it an excursion hard to match. For a day out in nature without too much driving, the Aïn Zarka waterfall, 20min from Tétouan, is ideal. If you’re looking to combine a great historical site with a seaside atmosphere, Tangier and its surroundings (Cap Spartel, Grottes d’Hercule) make a great day out.
You can also try hiking Mont Jebel Moussa if you’re a keen walker in search of great panoramas. This peak, not far from Tétouan on the way to the Strait of Gibraltar, offers spectacular views of the Strait and, on a clear day, of the Spanish coast opposite.

Directions

Do I need a car for excursions from Tetouan?

The car is clearly the most flexible option for exploring the Tétouan area, especially for natural sites such as the Aïn Zarka waterfall or Tamuda. For Chefchaouen, Tangier and Asilah, there are regular buses ( CTM and Supratours companies) and organized tours offer a practical alternative if you don’t want to drive on mountain roads or deal with parking logistics – Rent a car
