Best hotel with spa in the medina: Hotel Riad Dar Lys

Hotel Riad Dar Lys - view from the central patio

Nestled in the heart of the medina, Hôtel Riad Dar Lys won us over with its subtle blend of tradition and modernity. We were particularly taken by its magnificent, typically Moroccan, carved wooden ceilings and its central patio, where the birds sing in the early morning. The swimming pool on the roof terrace is the perfect place to cool off after a day of exploring, while the traditional Moroccan spa invites you to indulge in a moment of absolute relaxation. Note that the gourmet restaurant offers a fusion of local and international cuisine that you can savor in an exceptional setting. What refinement!

Best hotel in a 19th-century Moroccan palace: Hôtel Palais Faraj Suites & Spa

Hotel Palais Faraj Suites & Spa - patio view and welcome tea with Moroccan pastries

Majestically overlooking the medina, Hôtel Palais Faraj Suites & Spa is an old traditional residence that has been tastefully renovated to preserve its Fassi architectural heritage. We were impressed by the magnificent woodwork library and the arcades framing the central patio. In this 19th-century Moroccan palace, your mornings begin with an exceptional breakfast on the panoramic terrace, accompanied by breathtaking views of the city and surrounding hills. The attentive staff and warm welcome with mint tea and Moroccan pastries made our stay unforgettable. What about letting yourself be lulled by the song of the birds hidden in the orange trees on the patio of this haven of peace?

Best charming hotel: Hotel Riad Dar Laura

Hotel Riad Dar Laura - riad patio

Located just 2 steps from the Batha Mosque, the Hotel Riad Dar Laura is a traditional family home that has been updated with a real eye for detail. The magnificent moldings, right down to the faucets, and the black-and-white embroidery on the bedspreads echo the wall decorations of this charming hotel. This little architectural gem will seduce you as much as it did us, with its caftans displayed on the walls and its meticulous work on the stonework and arches. A cooked breakfast of homemade Moroccan crepes and jams is served in the central patio. If you’d like to discover Moroccan hospitality in a revisited, authentic setting, this pretty 3-star hotel is just waiting for you!

Where to stay in Fez: best districts

Why stay in Fez?

Fès, an imperial city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, is considered the cultural and spiritual capital of Maroc. Its thousand-year-old medina, Fès El-Bali, is the largest urban pedestrian zone in the world and houses a fascinating maze of 9,000 narrow streets, which we wandered for several hours! We fell under the spell of its preserved authenticity, where craftsmen and merchants perpetuate age-old traditions.

Fez - view of the city

Choosing to stay in Fez means immersing yourself in an incomparable cultural experience. The city offers a journey back in time, with its medieval madrasas, fondouks (caravanserais) and famous tanneries, an ancestral craft. We were captivated by the architectural richness that bears witness to the golden age of this city founded in the 8th century. Spending the night in Fès allows you to explore its treasures at dawn, when the medina gently awakens, or in the evening when the alleyways light up with a magical atmosphere.

The best places to stay in Fez: map

Here’s our map to help you get your bearings, with the main areas to stay in Fez:

Map of the best areas to stay in Fez
Map of the best areas to stay in Fez

Staying in Fès El-Bali (old medina)

Fès El-Bali - view of a traditional alleyway

Fès El-Bali, the ancient medina, is the historical and cultural heart of the city. This 9th-century labyrinth promises total immersion in the authentic Maroc medieval world. We were fascinated by its craftsmen working according to ancestral methods and its historic monuments around every corner. Staying in a traditional riad in this district gave us a unique experience, close to must-see sites such as the Karaouiyne Mosque and University, the Médersa Bou Inania and the famous Chouara tanneries.

Benefits:

  • Total immersion in the authentic atmosphere of Fez
  • Close to major historical sites and museums
  • Pedestrian zone to be redeveloped in 2019 and street surveillance cameras
  • A unique experience in renovated traditional riads
  • Lively atmosphere with souks, squares and craftsmen

Disadvantages:

  • Difficult access by car (parking outside the medina required)
  • Navigating the maze of alleyways can be tricky, and the telephone network is not always optimal.
  • Noisy local entertainment (calls to prayer, commercial activity)
  • Few facilities accessible to people with reduced mobility

Our favorite hotels: Hotel Riad Dar Lys, Hotel Riad Dar Laura and Hotel Riad Al Makan Fes & Spa

Staying in Fès El-Jdid (near the Royal Palace)

Fès El-Jdid - district near the Royal Palace
View of the surrounding countryside from the Fès El-Jdid district (here Hôtel Palais Faraj Suites & Spa)

Fès El-Jdid (“New Fès”), founded in the 13th century, is home to the Royal Palace and the old Mellah (Jewish quarter). More airy than the old medina, this area offers an interesting compromise between authenticity and accessibility. We appreciated its quieter atmosphere, while remaining close to historic sites such as the famous Merinid Tombs. This district will enable you to discover another facet of Fès’ history, notably through its distinctive architecture and historic synagogues. And don’t forget to take a stroll through the sublime Jnan Sbil public garden opposite the Palais Royal, with its magnificent flowered paths and fruit trees – admission is free!

Benefits:

  • Quieter, less dense district than Fès El-Bali
  • Easy access by car to the old medina with parking facilities
  • Close to the Royal Palace and historic Mellah
  • Different architecture and history in the old medina

Disadvantages:

  • Fewer traditional accommodation options
  • A little far from the main tourist sites of Fès El-Bali
  • Less evening entertainment and restaurants

Our favourite hotels: Palais Faraj Suites & Spa Hotel and Fes Heritage Boutique Hotel

Staying in the New Town of Fez

Ville nouvelle de Fès - boulevard

The new town of Fès, developed during the French protectorate, reveals a more contemporary, urban face of the city. With its wide avenues, contemporary boutiques and cafés, it is a striking contrast to the medina. We found this neighborhood convenient for its ease of access and modern infrastructure. It’s the ideal spot if you prefer the comfort of resort-style hotels while remaining within reasonable driving distance of historic sites.

Benefits:

  • Excellent accessibility by car, with easy parking (main roads)
  • Large, modern resort-type hotels with full facilities (pools, spas)
  • Amenities and shops (restaurants, banks, supermarkets)
  • Best options for people with reduced mobility

Disadvantages:

  • Far from the authentic, historic atmosphere of Fez
  • Need to take a cab or car to visit the medina
  • A more impersonal, less typically Moroccan atmosphere

Our favorite hotels: Royal Mirage Hotel and Jnan Palace Marriott Hotel

Other useful tips to keep in mind

  • Most of the alleyways in the medina of Fès El-Bali are closed to motorized traffic, except for local residents. If you are staying in this area, plan to park your car on the outskirts of the medina and complete the journey on foot or using the local luggage transport services.
  • For an authentic, timeless stay, we highly recommend choosing a traditional riad in the medina, such as the magnificent Hôtel Riad Dar Lys or Hôtel Palais Faraj Suites & Spa, among our favorites. These ancient Moroccan residences, organized around a central patio, guarantee an incomparable cultural experience that we particularly appreciated.
Traditional patio of a riad in Fez
  • The climate in Fez varies according to the season. Summers can be very hot (up to over 40°C), while winters are mild but sometimes rainy. The best times to visit are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November).
  • During the Ramadan period, please note that some services may be limited and timetables altered, but crowds are lower. Take this into account when making your reservation. It’s a city that attracts more and more travelers, whatever the season. So book your accommodation as soon as possible!
  • Fès is not only a thousand-year-old imperial city combined with a modern city, it’s also a rich cultural and events scene! It hosts national and international festivals throughout the year, such as the Festival des musiques sacrées du monde (details here), the Festival de la Culture Soufie (see here), the Fès Gourmet and the Moussem de Moulay Idriss. Don’t forget to check out the Fès cultural calendar on the city’s official website here! Also note that every year, the neighboring city of Meknes hosts the Salon International de l’Agriculture at Maroc (see here) in April, and most accommodations in the surrounding area (including Fès) are full at this time.
Official cabs in Fez
  • To get around the medina with ease, consider an official local guide, at least for your 1st day. This could make it much easier to find your way around this fascinating labyrinth. The locals are also very welcoming and helpful when it comes to finding your way around. In town, opt for official cabs (the little red cab in Fez) or VTC services.
  • Finally, bear in mind that the criteria for awarding stars to hotels can vary from country to country. In Fez, many of the tourist accommodations in our selection are set in old traditional houses (in neighborhoods that are sometimes noisy at night), as well as modern buildings.

Hotel Riad Dar Lys - room

Why stay there?

Nestled in the heart of the medina, the Hotel Riad Dar Lys is, in our opinion, the best establishment in Fez. Our experience was unforgettable on every level! This architectural gem brilliantly combines tradition and modernity in an exceptionally refined setting. Hotel Palais Faraj Suites & Spa, a tastefully renovated traditional house, is one of our favorites in Fez. We were captivated by this 19th-century palace, which retains the main architectural elements of a traditional riad while offering modern comforts. You’ll notice that the art deco decor blends perfectly with the traditional “zellige” mosaics and the elaborate star-shaped ceiling moldings. Then head for the Hôtel Riad Dar Laura, where we were charmed by the elegant decor, which blends traditional and modern elements with finesse. The spacious rooms are adorned with refined moldings, even on the bathroom faucets. The black-and-white embroidery on the bedspreads and pillowcases in our room is a beautiful echo of this! Traditional Moroccan furniture, wood shutters and wrought iron… It’s enough to immerse you in the authentic atmosphere of Fez! Mohamed, the friendly owner, personally saw to our comfort. Your traditional breakfast will be served in the light-filled central patio, where you’ll find fountains and a number of handmade caftans, the traditional garments worn by women on special occasions. Hôtel Riad Relais et Châteaux Fès - interior lounge

Why stay there?

Among the best places to stay in the ancient medina, the Hôtel Riad Relais et Châteaux Fès particularly caught our eye. This luxury establishment perfectly embodies the subtle marriage between Arabo-Andalusian splendor and Moroccan art de vivre. We were won over by this majestic palace, an authentic example of Hispano-Moorish architecture with its 4 harmoniously composed patios. Take time to observe the sculpted doors, zellige walls, stucco arches and marble basins that create a truly elegant setting. The refined ambience is enhanced by the ceiling moldings and illuminated fountain on the Andalusian patio, where musicians play the oud, a traditional stringed instrument. We also dined at the gourmet Restaurant Gayza. Renowned for its authentic Moroccan cuisine sublimated by chef Lalla Abida, whose savoir-faire has been handed down from mother to daughter for several generations, this table welcomes you to the heart of the riad. The suite we visited had a pleasant, unobstructed view of the pool and flower-filled garden, creating a serene, restful atmosphere. The hotel offers several relaxation areas, including a large outdoor pool with deckchairs and parasols, perfect for sunny days. And it’s perfect for families, with a large play area and children’s pool in the garden not far from the pool. The helpful staff will make your stay as pleasant as possible. You’ll also enjoy the services of the spa and beauty salon!

12. Jnan Palace Marriott Hotel (5 stars)

Jnan Palace Marriott Hotel - lobby

Why stay there?

A little higher up, but still in the same Fès district as the previous one, the Jnan Palace Marriott Hotel is one of the most prestigious historic establishments in Fès. We were impressed by the chic ambience and elegance of the place, with its large crystal chandeliers, woodwork ceilings and refined moldings from the moment we entered the lobby. The garden-level suite where we slept offered a comfortable space, with sober, modern decor in beige and brown tones. The space was well thought out, with a bedroom on the lower floor (albeit a little dark and not necessarily practical with stairs) and a living room on the upper level, both with en-suite shower rooms. There are a number of leisure facilities, including a large outdoor swimming pool, a modern gym with free access, and soccer and tennis pitches. Travelling with the family? There’s also a babysitting service available at extra cost. Young and old alike will love the playgrounds, the garden and the very large swimming pool. Ready for a dip?

13. Hôtel Le Grand Alcazar – Riad (4 stars)

Hôtel Le Grand Alcazar - patio with pool

Why stay there?

A sumptuous traditional riad in the medina of Fez, Hôtel Le Grand Alcazar won us over with its ideal location, making it easy to explore the treasures of the old city. Our spacious room was elegantly decorated, reflecting the rich heritage of Moroccan craftsmanship. We loved the four-poster bed, the refined moldings and the handicrafts adorning every room, adding a touch of poetry to the room. The traditional Moroccan “zellige” mosaic on the floor and walls adds authenticity and color, while the worked wooden shutters and wrought iron harmoniously complete the decor. From the bedroom, we enjoyed a view of the central patio. Our stay unfolded in a serene, typically Moroccan atmosphere. Finally, we enjoyed our breakfast on the beautiful sunny terrace. An enchanting awakening to a panoramic view of Fez!

14. Hotel Riad Dar Fès Tresor (3 stars)

Hotel Riad Dar Fès Tresor - traditional entrance

Why stay there?

To round off our selection, we have chosen the Hotel Riad Dar Fès Tresor as it is one of the most typical of the ancient medina of Fès. Its location in a quiet but central residential area offers a good balance between serenity and accessibility to the area’s main attractions. What makes this riad so special for us is its preserved traditional architecture, with carved wooden ceilings in every suite, walls adorned with Moroccan zellige mosaics and doors with colorful stained glass windows. The warm, attentive hospitality of the staff is also a highlight of this guesthouse, creating a truly welcoming atmosphere. From the rooftop terrace, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the city and surrounding mountains. Take the time to admire the colors of the medina as they change before your eyes – a romantic way to end your day’s sightseeing!
