Where to stay in Tangier: best districts
Why sleep in Tangier?
Tangier fascinates us with its unique geographical position at the crossroads of 2 continents, the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. This city, with a history stretching back thousands of years, took us on a journey back in time through its historic streets and emblematic monuments. A diplomatic hub in the 19th century, did you know that Tangier acquired “international city” status in the 20th century? Between the ancient era, Roman domination, Arab-Andalusian heritage, European influences and the American imprint, its rich history has helped shape its cosmopolitan ambience! In fact, it’s one of the most popular places to stay in Morocco.

Tangier’s best places to stay: map
Here’s our map to help you get your bearings, with the main areas to stay in Tangier:

Sleeping in Tangier’s Kasbah

The Kasbah, a historic citadel perched high above the medina, is the authentic heart of Tangier. We loved its cobbled streets winding between traditional homes and its breathtaking panoramas of the sea, Spain and the Strait of Gibraltar. We felt a spellbinding atmosphere, steeped in multi-millennial history.

- Relative remoteness from modern amenities
Our favorite hotel: Hotel Riad Dar Saba – Saba’s House
Sleeping in Tangier’s medina

The historic medina, with its bustling souks and authentic riads, offers total immersion in Moroccan culture. We were seduced by the bustle of its traditional markets and the richness of its architectural heritage. This part of the city concentrates the very essence of Tangier’s art of living.
Benefits:

Sleeping on the beach facing the Mediterranean Sea

The modern seafront, with its elegant corniche and sandy beaches, represents the contemporary face of Tangier. We enjoyed this dynamic area that combines seaside relaxation with urban amenities. There’s always something going on, especially on summer evenings when the lights of the Strait shine down on you. How about a stroll along the promenade near the Marina, listening to the sound of the seagulls and the waves?
Benefits:
- Direct access to beaches and water sports
- Numerous restaurants, cafés and shops
- Easy access and parking
- Modern, fully-equipped hotels
- Numerous Hop-On Hop-Off Bus stops

Our favorite hotels: Hotel Marina Bay City Center, Hotel Barceló Tanger, Hotel El Minzah Tanger
Sleeping in the heights of the Quartier de la Montagne

Head for the Mountain district, located in the wooded heights of Jebel Kebir! You’ll discover a prestigious residential setting far from the hustle and bustle of the city. We were won over by the tranquility of the area and the breathtaking views of the White City and the sea. It’s an ideal retreat if you’re looking for a relaxing break in verdant surroundings.
Benefits:
- Absolute calm and serenity
- Exceptional panoramic views
- A green, unspoilt setting
- High-end establishments

Other useful tips to keep in mind
- Tangier is a popular year-round destination thanks to its temperate Mediterranean climate.
- Remember to book your accommodation as early as possible, especially during the cultural festival periods (especially Tanjazz) and the summer months, as the city is very attractive!
- Access to the Kasbah is exclusively on foot, and there is a charge for cars and cabs. In the surrounding medina, the lanes are quite steep and sometimes narrow. Bring comfortable shoes to explore the cobbled streets.

- If you come by car, choose hotels with private parking, especially around the medina where access can be difficult. Find out more about parking in Tangier here.
- There is no tramway in Tangier, so to get around town, opt for the official cabs (blue and yellow in this Moroccan city) and VTCs, which are the main means of urban transport. Always ask if the meter is on, or negotiate the price in advance. You can also take the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus, which will take you around all the attractions in and around the city – book now!

- If you’d like to explore the surrounding area (Cap Spartel, Grottes d’Hercule, Atlantic coast beaches, Assilah, Chefchaouen), an organized excursion may be practical – see options.
- Note that some establishments (hotels or restaurants) do not serve alcohol, even in higher categories. If this is an important criterion, find out before you book.
- Bear in mind that the criteria for awarding hotel stars can vary from country to country. In Tangier, many of the tourist accommodations in our selection are located in urban and modern buildings. And you’ll also find several hotels in traditional riads in more authentic neighborhoods (sometimes noisy at night).
