The Majorelle Garden, created by the painter Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s and later saved from destruction by Yves Saint Laurent in 1980, is the perfect way to round out the visit with its museum dedicated to the fashion designer. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Marrakech\/Best-of\/i-sL8FTTJ\/0\/KN2NfBTP6c9gNh2ZS55NLHg5dCCbJdtTSJJ2SJbf6\/L\/best%20thisng%20to%20do%20marrakech-05-L.jpg\" alt=\"Bahia Palace\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bahia Palace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bahia Palace, built in the late 19th century for Grand Vizier Ba Ahmed, is a testament to the splendor of traditional Moroccan architecture. Fez, on the other hand, stands out for the richness and antiquity of its religious and intellectual heritage. When it comes to history and authenticity, we prefer Fez.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Handicrafts and Souks<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Souks of Marrakech<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Marrakech\/Best-of\/i-Q8PfFj6\/0\/MsQT78bkNSP8BjnzWQrLpwSNTH3ZRSxvS7cb3StgG\/L\/best%20thisng%20to%20do%20marrakech-02-L.jpg\" alt=\"Marrakech Souks\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The souks of Marrakech have been organized into guilds for centuries: dyers, babouche sellers, and spice merchants. We watched artisans hammer copper and dye leather using techniques passed down from generation to generation. The art of bargaining is an integral part of the experience.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Tanneries and Fondouks of Fez<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Fez\/Chouara-Tannery\/i-w35sqS3\/0\/L9KcbRrbCmWDTqJqKqZTd2QGnbQ3DP4kjTsB2H9Wz\/L\/chouara-tannery-fez-old-city-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"Tanneries Chouara\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our opinion, the Chouara Tannery remains one of Morocco\u2019s most remarkable centers of traditional craftsmanship. The process takes about three weeks and involves more than 250 families who have passed down this expertise from generation to generation. The colors come exclusively from natural ingredients: poppies for red, indigo for blue, and saffron or turmeric for yellow. The Nejjarine Museum, housed in a former 18th-century fondouk, rounds out this immersive experience by showcasing the arts and crafts of woodworking.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Fez\/City\/Nejjarine-museum-of-wooden-arts-crafts\/i-jBNtLxx\/0\/MwkVnNJdQ5bwdr6hKLhFdCg3ZrzFwrVZncVBNqqkp\/L\/nejjarine-museum-wooden-arts-crafts-fez-3-L.jpg\" alt=\"Nejjarine Museum\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Nejjarine Museum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our review<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both cities offer an immersive experience of traditional crafts, though in different ways: Marrakech for shopping and haggling, and Fez for witnessing craftsmanship that dates back nearly a millennium. Marrakech offers more ultra-luxury options, while Fez focuses on providing good value for money in historic riads. There\u2019s no clear winner: the choice depends mainly on your budget and the atmosphere you\u2019re looking for.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Excursions around the cities<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day Trips from Marrakech<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Marrakech\/Best-of\/i-gmFXrXg\/0\/Kk2F8WX34VMFckCL56s8qTwd9t6N2J7cBbrwVFrtk\/L\/best%20thisng%20to%20do%20marrakech-23-L.jpg\" alt=\"A&#xEF;t Ben Haddou\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A\u00eft Ben Haddou<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marrakech, on the other hand, opens the door to completely different landscapes. We enjoyed the proximity of the Atlas Mountains, about an hour\u2019s drive away, where the Berber villages and the Ourika Valley offer a lush getaway. The archaeological site of Volubilis, less than an hour\u2019s drive away, features perfectly preserved Roman mosaics. The village of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, perched on a hill, is home to the tomb of the founder of the Idrisid dynasty. Meknes, a neighboring imperial city an hour\u2019s drive away, charms visitors with its monumental gates and its UNESCO-listed medina, which is less crowded than that of Fez. Fez, however, retains a slightly better reputation for fine dining, thanks in particular to the delicacy of its pastilla and its regional wines. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Access and location<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two cities are located at opposite ends of the country. Marrakech is in central Morocco, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, while Fez is located further north, near the Middle Atlas. The drive between the two takes 5 hours and 45 minutes. Outside the Medina, taxis are the most convenient option, especially between Gu\u00e9liz and Hivernage. We recommend insisting that the meter be used or negotiating the fare before departure. Traditional horse-drawn carriages offer an alternative for sightseeing tours.   <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting around Fez<\/h3>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Fez\/City\/Bab-Boujloud-door\/i-Xxv4jFT\/0\/Lb8KLXqx8LsX8HhTLw9NmjMXM2xLHj4Gq4dqjw5cm\/L\/bab-boujloud-door-fez-1-L.jpg\" alt=\"Fez Square Without Cars\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vehicle traffic is prohibited in most of the alleys of the Fez Medina. Walking is therefore the best way to explore Fez el-Bali, supplemented by the small official red taxis or ride-hailing services to reach the new city. We recommend hiring an official local guide at least for the first day, as the maze of alleys can be quite disorienting.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our review<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Getting around presents the same challenge in both medinas: walking is a must. In Fez, however, it\u2019s harder to find your bearings, which is why it\u2019s a good idea to have a local guide from the very first day. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it possible to visit Marrakech and Fez on the same trip?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two cities are quite far apart.<br\/>By car, the drive takes about 5 hours and 45 minutes.<br\/>By train, the route usually goes through Casablanca, which adds half a day to the trip.
