To truly understand it, you also need to get a bird\u2019s-eye view: from the hills that surround it, the medina unfolds like a mosaic of ochre rooftops punctuated by minarets, with the rolling hills bordering the Sa\u00efss Plain visible in the distance. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. The medina as seen from the Merinid Tombs<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Fez\/Viewpoints\/i-9V2FM8M\/0\/MFQxNSvKvNNFZbqW2LdbbhFZxQvFmtcrkJxMWW7wp\/L\/mosque-panoramic-view-old-city-medina-fez-L.jpg\" alt=\"The medina as seen from the Merinid Tombs\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is undoubtedly the most iconic view of Fez, and for good reason: from these Merinid ruins perched on the northern hill, the entire medina lies spread out before you. You can clearly make out the green-tiled roof of the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque, the countless minarets, and the incredible density of the medieval urban fabric. We recommend visiting in the late afternoon, when the low-angled light sculpts the contours of the rooftops and brings out the city\u2019s ochre and terracotta hues.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Bab Jdid, F\u00e8s el-Bali, and the Modern City<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Fez\/Viewpoints\/i-8FqBHhq\/0\/Mzx4gQTH4bzNZ8BDWrhSBcXGJF2qp49kgrtc7k8CL\/L\/panoramic-view-fez-borj-sud-bab-jdid-newtown-L.jpg\" alt=\"Bab Jdid Gate\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Borj Sud, if you turn slightly, you\u2019ll discover a different view of the New City from the promontory\u2014a legacy of the French protectorate with its wide avenues. In the foreground, you\u2019ll see Bab Jdid, one of the southern gates of F\u00e8s el-Bali, while the modern city stretches out beyond it. The Mountains and the Hinterland as Seen from the Tombs of the Merinids<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Fez\/City\/Merinid-tombs\/i-GVdhMSk\/0\/Lxpzb2HXtv2gHCNC9g3LhjFPHvDpFT4CmM7MN8FnM\/L\/merinids-tombs-fez-5-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a clear day, across from the Merinid Tombs higher up the hill, your gaze will extend far beyond the city\u2019s rooftops, all the way to the first foothills of the Middle Atlas Mountains that mark the southeastern horizon. This third aspect of the site, often overlooked by visitors in a hurry, is worth spending a few extra minutes to appreciate. Above all, this view highlights the unique geographical location of Fes, where the Sa\u00efss Plain meets the surrounding hills. Please exercise caution during your visit, as there are no safety barriers on site and the road is very steep with hairpin turns.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. The view from Borj Sud<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Fez\/Fez-El-Bali-old-medina\/i-JMKn7KN\/0\/Kt8LXhBgGtQncmSMCkwxQ4vN7Ns8R3zCJGZXn7kMm\/L\/fez-medina-morocco-L.jpg\" alt=\"Fes - view of the old city\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across from the Merinid Tombs, on the other side of the medina, the Borj Sud offers an equally impressive view, though from a different angle. This 16th-century fortress overlooks the city from the south and allows you to take in the entire urban basin at a glance. We recommend visiting in the late morning, when the morning mist has cleared but the heat hasn\u2019t yet caused the light haze of dust typical of the hottest part of the day. This Saadian structure, recently restored and converted into a museum of fortifications, overlooks the city from the south.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Fez\/Viewpoints\/i-Nj52WcM\/0\/L4kf57dw7tM97NqjMfMt6FMWRTRchfFj8z28MqXd7\/L\/panoramic-view-fez-borj-sud-bab-jdid-newtown-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Medina and Mosques\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take a moment to look closely beyond the thousands of rooftops in the medina. You\u2019ll see the Merinid Tombs with the mountainous landscape in the background. Can you see them?  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. The view of the South Tower from F\u00e8s-Jdid<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Fez\/Viewpoints\/i-xbZ2bpM\/0\/MZkHH4MRjswMRxbzCbb4t7cQx5pNq4ZLj7Hgr8MMN\/L\/panoramic-view-fez-borj-sud-L.jpg\" alt=\"View of the Southern Borj from F&#xE8;s-Jdid\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just outside the F\u00e8s-Jdid neighborhood, another vantage point will allow you to frame the fortress itself on the left, with the surrounding hills and the monumental Bab-Jdid gate\u2014on the southern flank of F\u00e8s-El-Bali\u2014in the background. This viewpoint is less frequently photographed than the one overlooking the medina itself, but it offers an interesting perspective on the city\u2019s defensive topography. From this angle, you\u2019ll clearly see how Fez was built at the bottom of a valley, surrounded by strategic high ground. From the terrace of the Nejjarine Museum<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Fez\/City\/Nejjarine-museum-of-wooden-arts-crafts\/i-6vtGCWc\/0\/Mdr5xqZ47xL642jLhNgG6ww3PCcxfNbbFKMgq52F8\/L\/nejjarine-museum-wooden-arts-crafts-fez-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Nejjarine Museum Terrace\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike the two previous hills, this viewpoint is well worth the effort\u2014it\u2019s located right in the heart of the medina, on the terrace of this former 18th-century fondouk dedicated to the art of woodworking. The view here is more intimate, almost at roof level, offering a close-up view of the neighboring terraces and the surrounding minarets, notably that of the Al Quaraouiyne Mosque. We recommend experiencing this contrast after the hustle and bustle of the souks below: the terrace offers a quiet respite and a different perspective on life in the medina.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. The unique landscapes between Fez and Volubilis<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Fez\/Viewpoints\/i-r79qLvq\/0\/KgcKvbBptCZrqxS8QNcL7h3mSxBRnrVRPV93RxHcQ\/L\/panoramic-view-fez-sidi-chahed-L.jpg\" alt=\"Sidi Chahed Dam\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those extending their stay with a trip to the Roman ruins of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getyourguide.com\/site-archeologique-de-volubilis-l104991\/?partner_id=R3GYW4V&amp;cmp=maroc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Volubilis<\/a>, the road itself holds some lovely surprises. You\u2019ll travel through rolling countryside dotted with olive groves and grain fields, with occasional unobstructed views of the Sa\u00efss plains. Feel free to stop at one of the open or designated rest areas when conditions permit. We were lucky enough to have clear weather to admire the reservoir at the Sidi Chahed Dam and the surrounding mountains. The View of Jbel Zalagh<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Maroc-Lovers\/Fez\/Viewpoints\/i-q9r9qgP\/0\/NP2kqSNc5rDGjNtRNqJBCKFPfsgf7DZwbHrd4K8Rc\/L\/jbel-zalagh-panoramic-view-fez-2-L.jpg\" alt=\"Mount Zalagh\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the second, higher section of the Merinid Tombs, you\u2019ll see the imposing Mount Zalagh, which you can hike in a day when the weather is nice. This hill, which rises to over 900 meters north of Fez, offers one of the most comprehensive panoramic views of the region. There are several hiking routes to choose from, with durations that vary widely depending on the starting point. From the summit, your gaze will take in the medina, the new city, the Sa\u00efss Plain, and the foothills of the Middle Atlas.
